It might all die back anyway, or it might not, in which case I would have needlessly taken away it's ability to feed itself." Often a plant hasn't got a choice. When transplanting later in the season, and late June is later in the season, more times than not the feeder roots are disturbed and have to regrow before the bush can support top growth. One spends the next few days cutting back wilted growth as the bush attempts to regrow feeder roots. This whole process weakens it and lessens it's chance for survival or ability to get through it's first winter. I've found it's best to bite the bullet and prune back severely to start with than take the chance. Reading another post about how severly cutting back rose bushes to keep them smaller results in fast reqrowth should give us a clue on how this would help a transplanted bush. One other thing that can be done when transplanting would be to treat the bush like a new bare root and soak it in a bucket of water for 12-24 hours before replanting to hydrate it well. Plant stress on being transplanted is due to inability to take up water. If well hydrated and cut back there is not so much loss of moisture. Leaves that are not there cannot lose water through evaporation and food stored in the remaining canes is the source of new growth. I'd much rather take a 6 foot climber, cut it back to 12", and have it survive and grow after a year of getting use to it's new home than watch it slowly lose leaves and wilt away while trying to support growth it can't. Many years of trying various methods of transplanting have taught me this valuable lesson. One success without cutting back doesn't make it a fact that the method will work all the time. Comments (5)Some of the posts I have read suggested leaving the lid off and allowing it to dry a bit to kill the mites. I have a WF, and I only have 1 working tray right now. I have three layers of moist newspaper on top of the bedding and then the lid. Should I get rid of the newspaper? The directions that came with it suggested it, but I am wondering if it's part of the mite problem. Every time I take off the lid, there are about 12 worms on top of the newspaper and there is always 1 dead one covered in mites. Thanks, Gina...See MoreBig Chief question
Comments (2)Big Chief as named by Hoosiercherokee was a BW sudduth x Mystery RL cross. It was found by another hobby gardener who goes by "BigCheef" who posts in other tomato forums. He grew out the RL and found the taste and production to be superior to the BW Sudduth PL and sent seeds out to about ten of us to do F2 growouts. On my F2 growout I grew the RL and found production to be good but the taste was unremarkable. Hoosier grew out the PL's from the F2 and found them to be the best tomato he has ever eaten. This year I regrew the F2 and selected the PL for growout and so far have more tomatoes and flower clusters than previous BW growouts including BW sudduth. If my F2 PL turns out as Hoosier's in the taste department I should have some seed available at the end of the growing season. Size and color of the "Big Chief" variant are similar to the Sudduth PL. Comments (41)Paula is married also. Her husband appears on some of her shows. To me the entire thing centers around the change in policy with the Food Channel, DIY, Home & Garden, etc. In the beginning of these channels they had people that actually cooked, folks that actually fixed stuff and people that actually gardened. Shows had more content, fewer commercials and commercials geared more toward the content of the programs. All of that is pretty much out the window. Many of the shows are contrived with, IMO, Iron Chef taking the cake. There are several shows I do like on PBS when they aren't having their endless pledge drives.
