Cabs on top of counter - how close to sink?
I will have a 10'9" 30" deep wall run of cabs perpendicular to a 7' x 3' island.
The wall run lowers will be 15" TB, d/w, 36" SB, d/w, 30" DB.
The uppers will be 30" tall by 18" deep at each end, windows in between.
if I brought the cabs down all the way to the countertop, would they be too close to the sink? What if I went with 15" deep? I am thinking it would be good to get the extra storage.
There are only two other upper cabs and I plan to have them 22" above the counters, with a 2" light rail (so 20" clearance).
There is a second pretty big sink in the island.
I am tall, as are my sons, but resale is definitely an issue. Opinions?

Comments (11)My first choice for a counter top is either quartz or granite. Since I couldn't find anything I liked I puchased stock laminate counter top from Menards, but I'm not sure of the name. My intention is to live with this counter top until I find something I love. (most granite yards are hours away.) I was going to use this copper sink as an drop-in and change it to an under mount when the new counters were installed. I just spoke to a rep from Copper Sinks Online and I've decided not to install the copper sink at all, until the new countertops are installed. Now, it's back to the lumber yard! Comments (15)I bet the cabinets are built in place. Moving/removing might destroy them. You may end up saving the doors and having new boxes made. Then they can be any height you want. The sink will be a problem if you don't replace/raise the window, too. You need that sink for the feel of the kitchen if you want to keep the look of the cabs. It will probably cost the same to just buy new cabinets. But that doesn't solve the sink problem in the same foot print. And if you change the foot print then you've opened a new can of worms. Comments (12)Most pop up receptacles will not meet code for the required receptacle for several reasons. Most are only listed for temporary use. The only one I have found that is listed for such use is not in production the last I heard. In any case, ANY receptacle device installed IN countertops MUST be "LISTED for the application" That means that an independent government approved testing laboratory has tested the device to ensure certain standards have been met for outlets designed to go IN countertops, and that the installation instructions show the proper requirements for installing it in the countertop to meet the standards. This includes that the device's 'faceplate' seals well enough when closed to keep water out of the junction box, not a characteristic that a "wall" receptacle would normally poses. 210.52(C) (5) Receptacle Outlet Location. Receptacle outlets shall be located ON or ABOVE, but not more than 500 mm (20 in.) above, the countertop. Receptacle outlet assemblies LISTED for the application shall be permitted to be installed IN countertops. Receptacle outlets rendered not readily accessible by appliances fastened in place, appliance garages, sinks, or rangetops as covered in 210.52(C)(1), Exception, or appliances occupying dedicated space shall not be considered as these required outlets. Comments (6)Thanks for your comments. I think my garburator routine is a habit with no reasoning. I leave orange peels in the sink in the morning, and then I make dinner and flush the orange peels with the dinner food remains after I do the dishes. I will start putting down the orange peels right away. Does anyone use Method all purpose for the quartz? Thanks....See More

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoIf you will be prepping on the island, then I think the 15" deep cabinets to the counter will work. I have an 18" deep cabinet, and I don't like it--it's too deep, and I have to move things in the front to get to those in the back. You'll have 24" on the DW side, and about the same on the other side, if you count the drainboard.
If you will be storing dishes in those uppers, you might want to put a drawer (or two) on the bottom, because if you take a stack of dishes out of the cabinet and set them on the counter below, you can't close the doors until you move the dishes. You could keep your flatware, cups, or smaller plates in the drawer/s, and then you could also open the cabinets if something was on the counter in front of them.
