I have forgotten how to use this fat 'jelly' ...

I cooked up a huge pot of chicken & had the pan full of the 'juice' when I was finished. I put the pan in the refr. & the next day the top fat was separated from the rest & I discarded the fat layer ( used it once & some from a neighbor's butchered pig to make lye soap for my son's school project!) & now want to use the 'juice' & not discard it!

I know this 'jelly' is very healthy to use but not sure what many ways it can be used for. I have in the past just frozen it & later used it in soups, gravy base. etc. but there must be a lot of other ways it can be used also?

Thanks for helping revive my 79 yr. old memory!

I'd say pretty much anywhere you'd use plain water for some extra flavor. I'm usually only cooking for myself, but just CANNOT bring myself to toss chicken bones/carcasses without making some stock. Easy to do and pretty much "free" from what you'd just be throwing away anyway. If bones from a few chicken breasts yields a few cups of broth/stock... perfect for making rice.

Soup....cook rice or quinoa in it or use it as a base for all sorts of sauces....stir fry sauce.
Or cook it down more and make a demi glace.

If they are all dried out then they probably won't have any life in them. But if they are still firm..try it and see. You really don't have anything to lose by planting them now, but a little bit of time. Let us know what you do and if they make it! littlebit

ilmbg- I doubt that the problem has anything to do with Pentium vs. Atom. Are you sure it's not there and just listed generically in your Control Panel? Also, have you opened Control Panel / Mouse to check out all of the various settings and options? Sometimes you have to disable the mousepad in order for an external mouse to have precedence, or you have to enable an option for both to work at the same time.

Like dcarch, any scraps that the chickens don't want go into my garden, but the chickens really like the fat. Since they live in an unheated coop in Michigan, I think the fat is extra energy to help keep them warm, even though they are Rhode Island Reds and are extremely cold tolerant. Heck, they go outside and scratch in the snow and sun themselves sitting on top of snowbanks, so I like to help them out with extra nutrition if I can. Annie

You guys were great and really made me think. I've got the layout already with good workflow. I'm waiting until I get the actual design before I purchase the pendants and chandeliers. The contractor is providing the other lighting (cabinets and recessed). Definitely using dimmers. Also getting a mocket for the island. Granite is picked, but not purchased. Waiting for the plan to come back and tell me if I can get away with one slab or will need two. Then I'll go plunk down a deposit if I can find it again. Definitely an eased edge. Painting and finishes are in the works with the GC also. Haven't planned for any toekick drawers, but I want soft close and all drawers on the lower cabinets. Am skipping the tapmaster. But considering some sort of water filtration. Hubby drinks a ton of water. We'll have it in the fridge door, but thinking it would be good since I'll be filling the coffee maker a lot. I got a wasteking disposal and a stainless ticor sink. Do I need to get a "sink flange" in stainless? I think I read the one that comes with the waste king is bright chrome. I'm definitely taking before pics, and I better get on the ball on that. And I'll surely need a place to put a stepstool somewhere.

When I have excess, I'll use it to to cook dried beans. Most of mine goes into chicken enchilada soup. But you can use it to replace water in most any savory dish. Freeze in appropriate assorted portions--half pint, pint, quart, half gallon recycled milk/ half n half, cream cartons.
