Would you make builder replace a window at this stage?
Comments (9)The answer depends on a lot of things, such as... - What does your plan, as approved by your county, show? - If it shows your larger windows, why does the builder say he changed it? Unless he's got a reason that convinces you it's the way to go, I'd insist on the larger windows. - On the other hand, if your approved plan shows the smaller windows, it may not be possible to have the larger ones without having your plan re-engineered. It depends on the complexity of your plan, where your shear walls are, etc. - Finally, how important are those windows to you? If this is your "forever" home and you really want those windows, I'd pursue getting them. We had several windows changed at your building stage (although in our case, most got smaller because we raised the sill height, which obviously didn't present a structural issue). We're building our "forever" home, so have made several changes along the way that probably weren't very cost-effective. However, we knew we'd be living with whatever it was forever, so we just wanted it right (for us). DH often reminds me that almost any changes are possible. After all, people do drastic remodels all the time! :-) Something to keep in mind - - a good builder has a lot of experience, so give his/her recommendations serious consideration. On more than one occasion, we thought we knew what we wanted, but when we actually went to the building site and the builder showed us the impact of the different choices, we ended up preferring his recommendation over what we thought we wanted. Keep an open mind, but remember, you're in charge (mostly). After all, it is your money....See MoreHow many pictures in room when you stage it?
Comments (5)The house we bought had few pictures, but they were the right size. In fact, I measured them for future reference because I am crazy like that. Even with all of our decluttering talk, I agree about holding onto art. Even basic art adds up fast and not easy to find pieces, for me, that I love. You don't know what will work in you next space. If nothing else, you may want them just for the frames. I agree-- frames are expensive!...See MoreListing home soon - How would you stage this family room?
Comments (71)The point with paint is, pick your battles. Make sure the bathrooms and kitchens are completely up to snuff first, with a clean, well cared for look. Make sure the carpet isn't all ratty, and if it is, have cleaned and maybe get some judiciously placed area rugs. Entrances and exits, doors and windows looking in good repair, clean and fresh. Make sure the walls are in good repair. If you have all that, then repaint, sure. I'm not sure what percentage of people are discouraged by a bad paint job. Here's the deal though, I looked at a house that had been completely re-done, with the most outlandish and garish colors and finishes imaginable. The house was immaculate and maybe the owners loved it, but eeee gads it was so disharmonious to me and my SO that even though the price was right and the layout looked good, everything would have to be redone--paint, floors, surfaces . . . If your whole house is as assertive as the green color of your living room, then maybe yes, paint could make a huge difference. My SO detests green (I love it but that is one of the few areas we are not in agreement on) so he might immediately get a bad vibe with your living room. I love it....See MoreLiving room feedback. How would you improve this room?
Comments (43)I've been under the weather for the last few days, so wasn't able to act on any of the additional suggestions until today. Thank you so much to everyone for the feedback, pointing out both the good and the bad. Today I moved a few things around. I decided to concentrate my efforts of lighting, as I think this will help us to enjoy the room more. The new additions are just stand ins, while I look for the right lamps and plants etc. I will also look for better wall art by the love seat and go to Benjamin Moore to look for a warm neutral that's lighter for the walls. I also liked the suggestions to replace the several small accessories with larger ones. And also to try to incorporate the window seat into the room more somehow. I was thinking of trying more colorful cushions on it, to tie it in and make the eye travel back there more. I will keep the points about the tables in mind for when it's time to look at new furniture. Thank you again so much! I feel so much better about this room already! I will start a new thread if/when I have specific questions about lamps or pillows. Thank you!!...See MoreNewEnglandgal
