Growing Tomatoes

I think I messed up

So I have seedlings /new plants that were really doing well. Today I decided to give them a diluted fertilizer, well it didn't go so well. I left for work and when I came back they had wilted some and definitely look stressed. Not sure what to do, I've flushed a couple to see how they respond. Any suggestions?

They look fine to me. Maybe something else was the cause of wilt.

What and how strong was the fertilizer ?

I was using General Hydroponics flora series and it was mixed to a 1/3 tsp/gal then diluting it to a 1/3 of the strength for seedlimgs. They seem be doing better now. It actually might not be fertilizer burn, I think they are just water logged. One of my roommates thought they needed water, so they watered them, not knowing that I water them differently. Next time, I'll try not to freak out.

Separating and transplanting cucubmber SEEDLINGS REQUIRE some know how. I have separated and salvage 5 leggy seedlings from one small cell. Here is how I do it. FirsT, you water and feed your seedlings beforE the operation. Then, have their next pot ready on the side. Invervt and take the bunch out. Try to find the best place to separate them, and do that. If tangled too much, put them in water and gently shake them until they come separated. YOU ARE DOING ALL THIS IN A COOL SHADE. Plant them right away and water them thoroughly to the point of flooding. Also, burry them in the soil up to their seed leaves. Keep them in indirect sun/filtered sun for a couple of days or more untill they get over the transplant shock. Then you can give them more direct sun and let them grab the soil. When they have couple of true leaves, Plant them in the garden, Again, have the hole ready, water them first, invert, place in the hole, fill/pack and AGAIN, water them REAL GOOD.

The only reason I know of to plant the graft below ground is for winter protection. In your area that shouldn't be a big problem. I know that occasionally a grafted rose that is planted deep can go own root but that's not a guaranteed thing and takes years to happen. If it seems happy and healthy I'd let it be. Gentle Giant is a beauty and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

I've only grown Flamingo, not White Hull Pink Tip. The mature pod looks like it could be flamingo but seems a bit short. The seed you show does not look like flamingo seed from a mature dry pod. Flamingo seed is beige with dark brown steaks. Also, as the pod develops, it is streaked with pink, the pink doesn't progress from one end to the other. Flamingo pods take a long time to dry down as I recall. So....I'm inclined to say it is not Flamingo unless your seed is still immature and I don't understand your pod color development sequence correctly. I have no idea what the WHPT pods or seed would look like. Missed the other questions---yes, I'd skip the drawer too. Personally I'd never use it since it would be hard to see what was in it. Saw a great kitchen with mixed counters the other day---all cabinets were fir, but they did an island in soapstone and perimeter counters in marble. Worked beautifully. We are mixing wood and stone on two sides of the kitchen, as much for cost as for anything. I'll send some photos of our kitchen when it's done....hoping for Thanksgiving! :) but in the meantime, here's a link to one of my inspiration kitchens for stacking the cabinets. I asked about it here a few months back and got some photos of beautiful taller cabinets, too. We decided to stack because: 1) our cabinetmaker was not charging us much more for two versus one tall cabinet; 2) we wanted to be able to close off the top cabinets and put infrequently used things there so they wouldn't get dusty; and 3) we wanted to use glass, but we have a little kitchen and most of what's in the uppers is not pretty to look at. So we're putting glass in the top cabinets, and will store serving bowls and such up there. We are also only doing uppers along one wall, which helps with keeping it from looking too busy, though. With your description, most probably it was not over fertilizing. I used to fertilize my seedlings at 1/3 strength all the time. The pots are of good height so they should drain fine.

Who knows what else the roommates have been doing to "help"? My mother is constantly throwing off watering and feeding schedules in my garden because she'll notice the soil is dry or some leaves are turning yellow, and she wants to help. She means well, but it turns out to be "help", not help. It doesn't sound to me like you're doing anything wrong, Kevin. I should think they'll recover fine as long as they don't get any more mystery "help".

Yeah, I had to tell my roomies the plant rules, don't touch please. They look like they will survive, they just are a lil saturated with water. The leaves are curled and droopy, Im hoping they will just perk back up after a lil bit of sunshine tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

So you were using 1/6 tsp./gal.. For most dry chemical fertilizers, that is the appropriate amount to use if you fertilize every time you water. If you occasionally fertilize, 1 tsp./gal. is appropriate.

I think it's an appropriate amount when fertilizing young seedlings for the first time. It's always better to err on the side of a light touch at first with young seedlings, IMO. Especially in tiny seedling pots. Fertilizing at full strength is better when you have a bigger container or the plants are in the ground unless one has a ton of experience with a very specific setup and a lot of experience with the exact growing mix and exact fertilizer and therefore can predict exactly what will happen.
