Unusual bathroom vanity /sink questions

It's funny the small things that turn out to be difficult. I'd like some advice on the master bathroom vanity, please.

The space allotted is about 5' wide and in a shallow alcove. Plenty of walking space behind and to the left. One sink.

I think I like this style -- does it have a name, or is it just a shelf vanity?

However, I don't like the sink sticking up over the top of the shelf -- it's ironic that both of my example pictures show the same sink. I do like the patterned tile in the example on the right. I'd like the sink to be undermounted, which means it'd be covered by a simple board; something like this more cottage-y example:

Storage space is important. I like the neatly stacked towels (though I like colors better), and I'd want a basket for washcloths. To have more storage, would this style mesh with a linen tower on one side? Something like this -- I like that it includes a hamper:

So, putting this all together, it'd come out something like this:

The black lines are the two shelves ... mirror on the wall ... storage tower to the right.

I think this is my real question: The shelf vanity is rather modern ... while the linen /storage tower is traditional. Do they play well together?

Or would storage in recessed shelving (on both sides of the sink) be more in keeping with the look?

For the record, the tub will be a drop-in set in a deck.

No one would mistake me for a design maven, but I did have one thought about something you mentioned. ...while the linen /storage tower is traditional.

A linen cabinet can be whatever style you choose. The one pictured is more traditional, but different moldings or door styles can totally change the look. Personally, I like the idea of a closed cabinet, but that's because I use my linen cabinet for linens as well as personal bathroom items- things I don't necessarily want on display. Maybe you have another place for those things already.

I really think it's personal preference. Both ideas are very cool.

Have you ruled out deep drawers? Personally, the cleaning and tidying of those low open shelves would drive me bananas. Knowing you're mindful of aging in place, I'd be concerned about the aging friendliness of that setup.

Our vanity alcove is around 63" wide and all drawers. Our bath towels fit perfectly in a 24" wide X 10" drawer; I put the towels vertically, not stacked if that makes sense.

Thanks Jenanla for the links! I had only seen the last one and loved it. Claire, I too wondered about the depth of a standard farmhouse sink. I know my kids would love to fill it up and play in it :) but I dont think I would love that. I do like the fact that water would not sit on the counter in front of the sink (like it does now)after they have been brushing their teeth and such. I went searching and found this lavatory apron sink that is not deep and not bad in price. Thanks so much for everyones insight on this design. I will post pics when/if I get what I want. We are building a small house in stages. I'm having a long vanity space but have to use 18" vanities because of space issues. I want one single long rectangular sink to center in the vanity rather than two sinks, one on each end. I want to use a widespread faucet. I'm trying to get the sink size in proportion to the counter top space. Anyone have any suggestions or advice, I'm having a lot of trouble - everything is too wide (deep) to fit. thanks

I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. If I had been willing to go with a painted finish, I think we might have stuck with the 72" Modero.

Honestly with two boys and a girl you are going to need more storage and two sinks really would be ideal. Are you really sure the shower/toilet locations can’t change? They are the big barrier to success. And I completely disagree with the comment about toilet rooms not being good. My girls are both able to be in bathroom every single morning at same time because of this. Oldest in shower, in private space, all while youngest does hair at sink. Way less fighting over access and each having own sink amazing too.

Apologies if you have already considered this, but with a shelf vanity, if the sink does not sit on top of the shelf, then the sink will start at the counter, and go below the shelf. Its a design consideration (your right hand photo shows it ) -- what do you want visible -- plumbing wise. The depth of the vanity shelf front may need to be adjusted so that the bottom of the sink and the plumbing does not show, or plumbing is selected that is attractive. The cottage-y example has a deeper front on it to hide the sink bottoms. Benjesbride has an excellent point about keeping stuff on shelves clean -- it will take a lot of cleaning to not continually collect dust (it'll show on the shelving, and be embedded in the towels...dust, splashes, etc.). I have a linen tower in our master and it's my favorite feature. We have a large linen closet just outside in the hall but I love the tower for all the soaps, extra boxes of kleenex , hair styling products, etc. Basically it's our personal care pantry. The only thing I am changing when we redo the hall bath is getting a linen tower with drawers at the bottom half. So I think everyone should have a tower. I vote for the traditional cabinetry for function.

The open shelving looks pretty but only if you are without pets or kids. I need things behind doors just to keep the dust down from just one large dog.
