Climbing annuals and their growth habits
Comments (7)Cardinal Climber & Scarlet Runner bean are comparatively faster and will cover any thing around them in no time. Scarlet Runner bean is a heavy vine and require a strong trellis...(more water=more foliage=less blooms)... the pods forming after blooms are best in flavor when plucked young (6"-7") Cardinal Climber becomes invasive in warmer zones but is pretty anyhow attracting hawk moths, humming birds and off-course butterflies. Both above are not fussy with soil requirements but it should be a well drained one.. full sun is required.. Starry Night Sweet peas are a wonderful mix and very fragrant. They are less vigorous then above two climbers, so plant them away from them, sow them directly as they tend to dislike being transplanted. Pinch the plants when they are about 5" tall and do so for 3-4 time more again.. it does delay the first bloom appearance but the bushier plants will produce abundant blooms and the you can feel the aroma in the air, each color has different fragrance. Comments (14)Wrong, TCStoehr. It works with 3 wires, or even 2. TC canes grow so long, so fast, that you can totally eliminate any support wires below 3 feet, as has been pointed out in the initial post on this thread. When weaving canes, the point is not to bend them so much that they break or are damaged. That is best achieved by fewer support wires, not more. Once you get them woven through one side of the wires, and over the next, your work is essentially over. They will usually stay in position, even when covered with berries the following season. Of course, they also grow in laterals that should be cut off at 3-4 feet in length, and these may be pinned to the wires with tape or plastic covered wire if desired. Or, if they are not too low, they can be allowed to droop. Of course, you can have as many support wires as you like. But you will soon find that most of them are useless. If you have not grown TC before you are about to meet one of the most vigorous of all fruiting plants. Control is the name of the game with these things. Comments (27)Have had trouble with brunnera keeping their color all summer. All of them tend to go to green as the season progresses so that only in the spring do the beautiful variegations show up to best advantage. That said, the leaves are a good size, shape and texture always while pulmonaria do look ratty after bloom for a while. Very few seedling brunnera for me even from the green-leaved macrophylla but a good number of pulmonaria seedlings. I move them to a holding bed at 2-leaf size and keep to see what they turn out. A few fabulous most medicre and good for give-away or compost. For a great hosta try "Great Expectations". "Fire and Ice" is about the poorest growing one I have. Comments (3)'Felicia' in my experience is relatively upright and shrubby, but my plants aren't grown well. 'Cornelia' is a flopper, low, lax, and much wider than tall, unless you give it support, of course, or train it for example on a wall. 'Cornelia' shares this habit with 'Pax', 'Buff Beauty', and 'Moonlight'. If your roses have bloomed by now, you will recognize 'Cornelia' by the pale strawberry pink of its flowers--'Felicia's are soft rose pink, a cooler tone--and by 'Cornelia's dark red new growth and slender dark pointed leaves, as well as by its long canes and lax habit.
