Tile vs Carpet for dry basement with no plans?

Okk.. So we completed a new construction build.. Part of the build included doing all framing and electrical in what was supposed to just be an unfinished basement.. Well after being in the house for a few months we are getting the itch to complete it to have some extra space.. The laundry is in the basement as well as the mechanical room.. There were never any "formal" plans, although right now we are thinking of just having some storage and a play area for the baby while laundry is getting done/folded.. Perhaps a general "hangout" area.. Anyway.. It is an open concept layout and we have about 1400 square feet.. We are facing the age old debate.. Do we do carpet? Or do we do tile? Keep in mind that the house has been "completed" for a number of months.. It has seen winter and summer months and we have not had any leaks in the basement at all (knock on wood)..
We were first thinking of doing the wood look tile which we feel will look great but also be practical in a basement.. The problem is that all of the porcelain wood look tile is fairly expensive.. Most we have found is around $2.00+ sq/ft. We have found some in the $1.50 sq/ft range at our local HD which is a special and not enough for what we need to cover.. We have a family member who is willing to install for little to nothing as a "favor", however you still have all of the material needed for installation..
We also considered going with a low pile carpet. It is not a high traffic area and at this point is not really a "necessary" space to finish.. We would just like to have a finished look to the room.. We were thinking of going with a cheap HD carpet that they run on specials. We have saw some that we would be ok with for as little as $.75 cents a sq/ft. Add in the carpet padding which is $.80 sq/ft and you are looking at $1.55 a sq/ft total.. And from what I am understanding installing carpet over the concrete is not very time consuming, nor is there an abundance of material needed so the cost pretty much stays the same..
Our conclusion was that the carpet was going to be a cheaper upfront cost to get the room completed.. And being a low traffic area that at most will be a "hangout" or play area or even storage we figured it would be the most economical choice.. Just wanted to get some opinions on those who have finished their below grade basements..
