Gift Card Shopping and Strategy!
Comments (20)I think gift giving divides into what I call order takers and dream fillers. Order takers want to provide something that the recipient specifically wants or needs, and that completes the 'transaction'. A subset of order takers just need to check off a gift from the list, and as long as it is an object or GC, check it done. For an order taker, gift cards are a godsend. No more running hither and yon trying to find X or Y, just pick up the card, load it and boom, mission accomplished. Dream fillers want to provide a gift that, as the saying goes, the recipient didn't know s/he wanted until it appeared. For dream fillers, the downside is trying to get into the minds of people to suss out just the perfect item. Not an easy task! For a dream filler, gift cards or cash completely negate the goal, and to boot they kill the dream by making it crystal clear just how much was spent on fulfilling the 'dream'. I used to be a dream filler--it was my perpetual goal to get the PERFECT gift for those on my list. However, as I've gotten older I have come to realize that as with much else in life you can't control or force anyone to feel, do or enjoy gifts no matter how carefully you try to pick something special. And of course gift cards as a product have exploded; you can literally give them for every and any product or service. What I do now is try to combine order taking and dream filling. So, for Christmas I paired a package of sugar free chocolate bars I special ordered for my diabetic dad with a GC for a movie theater. He and my stepmother will be facing an extended period of medical treatment out of town and my 'dream' is that they can have a night out at the movies as a respite, where he can snack on treats that aren't bad for him. I gave my sisters, all of whom like me are avid readers, each a pair of book-themed novelty socks packaged with an Amazon GC. Dream: they can order something they enjoy reading and peruse it wearing snazzy socks. Okay, that one is pretty light hearted dream filling but still, it's at least a start! And that's how I try to combine the practicality of gift cards with at least some attempt at creativity and personalization. Ann...See MoreHostess gift - Green Card Celebration Party
Comments (2)Thanks, dian. Great ideas, but the party was last night and I just saw it this a.m. I ended up going with a gift basket with some food items wrapped in decorative bags that said such things as "Call it Home" and wrapped in a ribbon with a little key hanging from it. Then a small photo album with a personalized front cover with a green alien graphic on it, and the alien was holding a sign and inside the sign read the family's name. Then "Celebating with our Resident Aliens" was displayed on the front and then the celebration date. Other food items also were in the basket. It was really cute, and I'm glad I decided against the bottle of wine. That was the standard gift. Nice but I wanted to put a little more thought into the gift....See Moregift cards
Comments (8)One of the many reasons I personally hate giftcards--I NEVER buy or spend them! Most people know better than to give me one because I just regift them--but only as part of an additional present. I'll only gift a present for shopping to a kid or elderly relative on a fixed income, and then I send CASH! (in the form of a check, of course) A giftcard from Target's not so bad because it's not really someplace you have to make a special trip to go to, but cards all the ONLY present my SDs stepdad's family gave them for EVERYTHING, and every single card was for a different place! All little out of the way "boutique" shops, and each individual card was never enough to really buy ANYTHING they wanted there. They would come back with nothing but 20 of those stupid cards, leaving me "on the hook" to help them out. Did I chip in? Yes, but only because I then deducted it, not from their allowance because we didn't give them one, but rather from their salary! They both worked for me helping out in my business, which they volunteered for and enjoyed because I paid them far better than their friends made working at McDonald's, Wal-Mart, etc. To teach them the value of money, for big ticket items such as computers, cameras, and other electronics they had to thoroughly shop for the "best deal" and present the results of their research in excel spreadsheet format. They now budget and manage their money very well....See MoreLacking a bonus, I don't like gift cards/certificates
Comments (16)Giftcards have their usefullness. I've heard of inactivity fees, but never experienced it first hand. I give a few giftcards a year. I give them for consumables (coffee shop, restaurant), because I obviously cannot give the teacher 4 cups of coffee for a gift. But I can treat her to 4 cups of coffee at her convenience with a giftcard, if I know she drinks coffee. If not, another place. And you can add my name to Jodi's wishlist. Give me a Barnes & Noble (any bookstore, that's just closest to my house) gift card, and I'll be a very happy girl! When someone gives me one of those, I know they know what I want. Forget the diamonds, books are this girl's best friend- but it's hard to buy a book for someone else, it's best to let them pick it. And I have a B&N discount card, so I will get more than face value of the card, by up to 40%....See Morelana_roma
