Possible to replace one panel of a garage door?

Our garage door came from Sears and was installed by a previous homeowner. It has a row of windows in the second panel down, and the windows have faux decals or something in the insides of the glass to make them look "fancy" I guess?

I would prefer no windows at all, but as the door is fully functional I would rather not replace the whole door if I can just replace that one panel and then paint the door so there is no difference in color.

I called the Sears guy out a couple of years ago for another issue and he said that it would be just as expensive to replace one panel as to install a whole new door. I don't know if this is true or if he just didn't want to mess with it.

Has anyone had just one panel replaced, and if so--did it cost as much as a new door?

We had a couple panels damaged in shipping while putting up new garage doors this year, but it wasn't caught by the installer. We were shipped new panels for free, so I don't know how much they cost individually or for shipping; but to replace one panel meant completely dismantling the current one and reassembling with the new panel so the labor was comparable to a new install.

If the door is several years old, you might find that the manufacturer no longer produces that model. Regardless, the labor cost would be not much less than a complete replacement and the panels would be a special order, plus shipping charges.

Other possibilities you might consider would be to replace the glass panes with painted panels or to paint the inside of the current glass panes.

No problem. Well, more than likely you will have to turn to a custom door manufacturer to build a replacement panel, but with so many manufacturers producing "carriage style" garage doors, I do not think it would be difficult for you to get a replacement door that would compliment the remaining two. Holmes Garage Doors was an extremely popular wood garage door manufacturer. The company was purchased by Clopay Corp. several years ago and the brand was phased out on the West Coast. It is however still available east of the Mississippi. http://www.holmesgaragedoor.com/where.asp A manf. that we work with on the West Coast has a facility in Old Fort North Carolina. They may be able to build you a replacement panel. Or, their company offers custom designs which generally do not add anything to the overall cost. Re-reading your original post, it sounds like your door is fairly simple. If you have flush exterior panels, I don't think it will be difficult for them to build a door to match the others. I have a Chamberlain that i'm upgrading to the MyQ wall panel. I can't get the wall unit to work. I have 2 identical garage doors, 1 works just fine. The second is blowing my mind. Here are the facts: - The old panel works. - New panel LED will not turn on. If I play with the red wire (rub it on the back a bit) it will start the garage door moving, but still won't turn on the LED even for a moment. - I stripped new wires and tried those. Still nothing. But the old panel will still work fine with the new stripped wires. - Chamberlain was very kind and sent a new panel. Same outcome with all the combinations from above. What could possibly be wrong? The other garage door was very easy to change out and has worked just fine. What really gets me is the old wall unit continues to work just fine. Why I need to change it? I don't really, but as I've been automating things in the house, the garage doors are nice to control from my phone. I can set an alarm if they're opened too long (kids forget to close) and if i'm gone I can let someone in without having to send them through the house.

What style is your house? What style are your furnishings? Are you asking about a 6-panel straight top vs. a 2-panel arch top, or are both arch tops? Whatever you choose should be the same as the others you will be installing later. Go with a smooth texture for interior doors. unless you are going for a rustic look.

If you live in a cold climate, insulated doors make a big difference in winter and summer. I replaced an old sheet metal door with a double steel wall insulated one and it's the best money I ever spent. If you do replace all 3 please try to make sure they don't get scrapped. Donate them to the Habitat for Humanity Restore or a similar place.

Thank you all. The labor costs explains it, I guess. I did think about just replacing the glass. I tried to find someone to do it by calling glass and window repair companies but struck out. Maybe I will try that again, because I really hate those decals or whatever they are. I actually feel jealous of my neighbors who all have normal garage doors that don't look like they are running a bordello.

Have you tried to remove the 'decals'? If they come off, you may be happier with putting something like this on the current windows.

Thanks, My3dogs. As I recall, the decals or paint or whatever makes the design is on the inside of the glass, somehow. Not the inside of the garage, but actually inside the window--maybe between two panes of glass?

Oddly enough, my mom just bought a house around the corner that has the same weird thing on an exterior door. Even though it looks like a single pane of glass, there is a dragon (!) somehow in the glass although you cannot feel it or find anything to scrape or peel off on either side. Before she bought the house I saw the dragon and thought "oh, some kid put a decal on this window, I'll peel that off for mom before she moves in". Then I set about trying to do it and ???? cannot even figure out how it is in there!

You can replace just one panel easily, but you'll have to find a dealer that carries the same line of doors. Look for a company sticker on the inside of your panels and call to see if they're still around.
