Kohler Greek tub as tub/shower combo
Comments (18)Wow, thanks bumble doodle! Tt is great to know that the tub works well as a shower. We are tall too--at least most of us (two of my teenage daughters are twins and one is 5'2" and the other is 5'10", so maybe the short one complains a bit but that's ok, since she complains about everything!) We are getting the non-jetted version. Also, I am hoping that building the deck at the front will help with the water spray. I am pushing the tub back into an alcove under the window the long way (so we get into the tub at the 32" side rather than from the 48" side) and we are trying to go without shower doors in order to make the bath feel open. With a deck, we buy a few more inches of length to help avoid water on the floor. We may not succeed and will put a panel on if we have to. Any thoughts on this?...See Morebathroom hell (blue tub, pink tiles), redo help needed
Comments (6)What a bathroom! What a neat tub and sink! Is this a vacation home or permanent? I'm not sure it matters but it would work better for a vacation home (psychologically anyway), but what about doing the tub/shower plumbing like an old clawfoot with shower added? Full surround shower curtain (or just two sides if you want to redo the tile nice and watertight I guess) with the showerhead piped openly from the lower plumbing and attached to the curtain rod? Wrong terms, I know, but maybe you know what I mean. LIke the one linked below (cheaper versions and different configurations are available--this was just a quick google.) I'd guess there used to be a thicker floor that was removed and nobody bothered to tell the toilet. If you're really being cheap, you could maybe get away with a lot of paint on the cabinets and curtains over the missing doors, but the cabinets would have to be sturdy enough to keep for that to work. Crisp white tile is inexpensive and you CAN put tile on a piece of plywood for the removable countertop. It'll be heavy enough you won't need to anchor it. Maybe you can DIY drywalling the ceiling. It's not a fun job, but it's a good bonding experience with whatever friends you can get to help. :) Here is a link that might be useful: example of ceiling mount shower curtain/tub-to-shower conversion...See MoreAdvice for Waterproofing tub/shower surround
Comments (3)For a tub surround a liquid membrane might be easiest. Hydroban, RedGard, etc. I'll add that for the crown, he can use an exterior-rated crown. PVC like this for example. No MDF. Wood can be used, but you can have issues. If wood, prime all sides, even if it comes pre-primed. I recommend a semi-gloss or gloss for added moisture resistance on wood. But I really recommend looking at the PVC....See MoreWorried about quality of work on bathtub and drywall
Comments (10)The structure is new. We had him build an addition on to our house and add this bathroom. I'm pretty sure I know why the surround is out of whack from the studs, in the contract we specified that he add backing to the tub structure to allow us to add grab bars in the future and to have something to screw the shower door into so it is not just attached to the fiberglass. I expected him to add a stud on each side where the shower door would attach so he could screw into that, and I expected he would glue/adhere plywood on to the back of the fiberglass tub surround before he installed it to attach the grab bars according to manufacturer instructions. He did neither of those, he screwed a piece of plywood between the studs and the tub to attach those, which is moving the tub flange away from the wall by that thickness. So now that that is all there, is there a way for this to be finished and not look like crap? I wanted to get opinions before I discussed it with the contractor because we have complained several times about the quality of his work and I want to know if this is fixable before I bring it up to him....See MoreIowacommute
