Evelyn...expecting too much, too soon?

My own root Evelyn, purchased as a 1 gal. from Chamblee's, is a blooming machine, unlike the numerous reports others have given about it being stingy of bloom and slow to repeat.

It is in its second year in my garden.

What puzzles me is that this year it has about 12 basal canes, all of which are the thickness of a pencil, no more, and reach about 2.5 ft., terminating with mostly 3 bloom clusters.

No canes are growing longer or thicker.

Is this growth pattern normal for its age? I thought huskier, longer canes would start appearing by now, in light of its prodigious flower output.

The numerous flowers are smallish, what one would expect to see at the end of such thin canes.

It is getting what I believe is very good care, the same as the rest of my roses.

The fact that there were three cuttings that took in the pot Chamblee's sent, and I planted it as it was....could this be the reason for such abundant, but puny shoots? I sometimes separate such roses, but didn't this time. It could simply be a case of crowding

Any ideas?
