Is this RRD?
Comments (6)Thank you for your responses. I think that Marie Daly is probably fine for right now and I just go a little scared about her new growth. It is firming up and turning green. No extra thorns or odd growth. There a lots of spider mites in my garden right now which would explain the wrinkled leaves. I really don't know about the orange rose. The deep red cane on Ballerina comes from the ground (basal) (I grow own-root roses) but there are 2 canes (lateral) that have more prickles/thorns than other new growth and those 2 canes are growing from nodes that already have canes, so there are 2 canes in each spot, but not three. Connie, I think I understand what you are talking about, but thank-you for your offer of pictures. I have looked at the pictures on rosegeek.com several times. I still am waiting to see what else develops on the roses, so I haven't pulled any of them out yet. Thank you for your help! Ruth...See MoreRRD? (Sorry, long question...)
Comments (6)First lets talk about your gallicas. Whatever was wrong has died. That's good. And what's left seems to be healthy. That's also good. Some plants get a disease, and the disease is isolated by quick death of the infected plant parts. A gallica in Madisonville IN died in a very similar way about five or six years ago and it is very close to where RRD had become entrenched in a state park. I've seen similar quick death in Cl. Old Blush and on my found rose Cleveland Cemetery White. On both Old Blush and CCW, there were witches' brooms of new growth, then the whole stems died. And left behind some plant parts that came back healthy. Can we say that these had definite RRD? No. But they had enough RRD symptoms to strongly suggest RRD. Hearing about your gallicas sounds a lot like what happened in Madisonville. The Powdery Mildew...sometimes when it would appear in a normal summer on a usually PM-unsusceptible plant, the PM would be followed by RRD. This year, that doesn't seem to be the case, in my garden, at least, as my big PM infected plants seem to be putting out normal regrowth. BUT, my plants aren't doing the hyperthorny " Very red, extra thorny, kind of twisted down on top - or wilted, or something. I looked at it for a long time. There are several of these shoots on one branch." That's at least five symptoms of RRD on that one cane. Can you cut that cane off really low (better yet pull off the roots that support it?) re the bristly locust....I've never heard of that plant in any of the plant pathology literature I've read. I'll check it next time I go to the library. I think, though, you may have gotten lucky and had a few isolated roots left behind that didn't get the problem into them. I'll see if I can find out what it's causal agent is. I plan to go to the library this weekend. ALoha's vegetative growth is sort of normal for Aloha. This year, especially, there've been lots of reports of the vegetative growth extending into summer. The only two blooms I've got on Aloha right now are on the top of the arbor so I can't see if mine are normal now or not. Hope this starts to help. Ann...See MoreWeird Rose Growth. RRD or Round-up?
Comments (7)A couple of comments, We have seen RRD on a large bed of Dr. Huey in the spring, and it's not red, but the green Round-up look alike, and by fall, it was no longer RU lookalike but much, much worse. In the background, it looks as if the nearby fenceline was sprayed with a herbicide with an automated sprayer that took out about 18" of grass, etc. It was so hot this summer that most herbicides' volatility was enhanced. And all of these problems seem to have come up midsummer onwards. I don't think I see any symptoms of the a problem that was there in spring, and then came in even worse recently. But I am not certain. What I do know is that I'd take the sick canes off and wait. They aren't going to get better looking in the next two years even if it's ONLY round up. The folks at the Vineyard might want to send samples to the plant disease lab at Virginia Tech (attention Mary Anne Hanson) and she could check for eriophyid mites which could be expected to have higher concentrations if it's RRD....See MoreUnusual new growth on Marie Daly - not early RRD I hope?
Comments (8)From what I can see, it doesn't look like RRD to me. I have no direct experience with RRD, BUT, I did present a Love Song and South Africa with growth VERY similar to what I can see on your image. New growth can look different, and can vary dependent upon the class of rose etc. The RRD or not consensus for my roses, including that of Ann, was it likely was not RRD, but funky growth nonetheless. Two years later, those roses are fine.... I would, however, remain open to more analysis, and as Patty wrote, more images from different angles etc. would be helpful for those who know the RRD menace well. Good luck.
