Removing receiving wall on tub/shower combo. Crazy idea? Shower head?

Hi all,

Question: We are about to remove the receiving wall in an alcove tub that has a shower. Is that crazy? What kind of shower head should we use in an alcove tub with the receiving wall removed (toilet right next to the removed receiving wall)?

We were initially going to put a glass panel there, but now considering trying it out without the the glass panel and see how much splash we get (based on input from a store). Has anyone experienced this? Would a rain shower do the trick? Would have loved a Speakman! Thank you :)

More info: this is a hallway bathroom that guest and (supervised) kids will use, small and long (5' X 12'). Layout: vanity, standard alcove tub with shower (with enclosed on three sides with full walls), then toilet in a nook behind the bathtub receiving wall (which we want to remove to open the space up / get more light from the window into the tub area), small window next to the toilet.
I have ordered a double apron alcove tub so I will not longer need to make a small pony wall between the toilet and the tub to set the tub. I have also ordered a swing door to replace the shower curtain (4 ft' long door, with a break in the middle, nice and easy foldaway type).

Our hall bath is set up like yours without a wall between the tub and toilet I did not plan this it was how it was put in in the twenties. You will need a two piece curve bar with a ceiling mount bar. I find two shower curtains with an opening in the middle of the front of the tub the best for keeping water from splashing out with my kids, oldest is 9. I have a cheap Costco railhead/ hand held combo which when aimed properly is never an issue.

Pardon my bath it is nearly a hundred years old and shows it age. :(

Without the curtain my toilet would be wet so you will need something there I believe, either glass panel with glass doors or two curtains and wait for doors.

i actually prefer curtains to glass for bathing small children and I also prefer curtain to glass for kids and guest who most likely will skip the squeegee process.

Train head makes a huge difference. I have a kohler Greek tub that is only 48 long. Partial wall on one side and open in front. There is a step in front. The step gets a little wet but that's it. I posted photos of my new bathrooms a few years ago. June 2012. Take a look.

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. aknall, thank you so much for your input! When you said to push out the shower a bit I though "No way, no room!" I had to get my tape measure back out (even though I just did this last night) and confirm that yes, indeed, there is room for that. I played around with Lowes' planner last night, and my ideal, no-holds-barred plan would be to take out that linen closet entirely, put in a 60" vanity with two sinks (I guess) and purchase a cool cabinet to put on the lau rm wall and serve to store linens. 36" cab will still allow for a 24" towel bar. Really, demo is the least expensive part, since we/I can do most of that ourselves. FWIW, we had a big old vanity in our former home that had one sink in the middle. I really didn't mind, and it gave us each our own space for our own "stuff." But I could see the resale value of a double sink. NOT that we plan on moving again, fifteen times in 25 years really is enough, don'tcha think, but you never know.

That alcove is designed to house a tub only, not a tub shower unit. You can't "repurpose" what's there without water damage to your floor, window, and behind your walls. The tub itself not designed to be used that way, and neither is the window designed to be in a wet area. You'd need to rip it all out and start over by installing a smaller and waterproof window, then installing a tub that had an integral tile flange which is part of the waterproofing system needed. Then your waterproofing membrane and whatever wall cladding you might want.

whatever the curtain, buy a 'clear' liner, not opaque one. makes a huge difference when you are in there showering. i find the best way to dry out the shower fast is to put the curtain to the middle of the rod, with both ends open... you get better air flow. fan out the bottom of the liner both ways, it will dry faster too. once its dry, you can decide to push it to one side or the other for maximum purtiness. it also makes a small bathroom feel larger.
