I would think that you can. I bought clematis from Lowes late in the season and there are actually 3 varieties planted together. The bloom season was over, but the leaves are slightly different. I am looking forward to next spring to see what colors I actually get; the tag showed white, lilac, and pink.

I had never heard of 'Wall of Flower' so I Googled it. I could only find it available from Michigan Bulb which I believe has a poor reputation. It sounds like a made up name for sales purposes. I'd stick to named cultivars from a reputable source.

Oh my lord, yes!! Perhaps one of the worst for any mail order nursery! They are part of the Direct Gardening Association, a grouping of various mail order plant sources that have a well-founded reputation for mislabeled/misnamed plants, shipping tiny, half dead specimens and perhaps the worst customer service imaginable!! Both have hugely negative ratings on the Garden Watchdog website. And Michigan Bulb is infamous for making up plant names on well-recognized cultivars.......like they want you to think they are offering something unique or exclusive. NOT!!

FYI, for ease of pruning chores, it is recommended to plant clematis only of the same pruning group together. Otherwise, it gets very complicated at pruning time if the vines have intermingled.

Try your local nurseries first. They generally have a good selection of the common varieties and larger plants than one gets ordering by mail. Fall sales are starting in our area. Best selection seems to be in the spring.

I bought many of mine from Donahue's though as it is located in our area I didn't buy them by mail. They also supply many nurseries and big box stores with clematis. They sent me a replacement plant (for a mislabeled one I bought the spring before) through the mail which arrived in excellent condition.

Here is my single variety which forms a "wall of flowers" 'Betty Corning'. It also blooms earlier and longer than 'Etoile Violet' and while I have not noticed any fragrance some say theirs is fragrant.

Regarding pruning and selection of plants. In my area clematis generally die back to the ground so I treat most type 2 and type 3 plants the same, as type 3, cutting growth back close to the ground. Some type 2s that have double blossoms on old growth I leave pruning until spring to see if any old growth has survived. Since the base of the plants are two feet apart it is not difficult to tell which vines to cut near the base. The cut vines can be left to wither away during the winter or carefully removed after they have wilted. Not complicated at all.

I grow no type 1s as they are not hardy here.

To the right of the Betty Corning in the photo above last fall I planted a type 2 which bloomed early and was cut back after blooming. Some of my other type 2 and type 3 plants intermingle vines when not cut back but that doesn't seem to be any problem for them.

If you are in a climate that doesn't result in a complete die back over winter and you do not mind delaying the bloom period on type 2's then sure, they can be planted and pruned together. My choice is not to - I prefer to grow mine distinct from each other and I tend away from the LFH's in the first place - but it is an option if you are so inclined.

I am in the UK so I have no knowledge of where to buy Clematis in the US. I have heard about Michigan Bulb, however, on these forums. Etoile Violette is a lovely cultivar and any reputable seller would just give it its proper name. It is a Viticella hybrid so you might want to research that. It isn't one of the larger flowered ones but I love mine.

As a former Mn gal you understand our growing joys and challenges. I live in Maple Grove near where I-94 & I-694 come together. Winters here are not as severe as those I experienced growing up in north eastern South Dakota.

I grow Etoile Violet and as Floral says it is a nice bloomer.

Seriously! I can actually grow things here--I'm like a full zone and a half warmer! I grew up in Eden Prairie. We grew hostas and impatients and that is about it....tons of rock gardens.

Most severe winters I experienced were still in MN--even compared to the UP of Michigan. Minnesota just gets so COLD, and very little snow in the last few years for plant insulation.

If you are in an area with good nurseries, local is good and often they are marked down now since they are done blooming. My area is rural enough that there isn't a lot of choice, so I mostly do mail order. Brushwood as mnwsgal linked above, but also Joy Creek Nursery and Silver Star Vinery on the west coast and Hummingbird Farm in Maine are great sources I've used. I've also gotten some little ones from Bluestone perennials that have grown well.
