Save an orchid, kill a squirrel(not)
Comments (16)This thread is getting more and more personal - it sure does belong to conversations side, but since it is here, I will go on. Jane, sorry to hear about your problems with deer (no, really). Could this have something to do with deer having nowhere to go for food, as people extend their habitat further and further? Hummm...As you seem to be very (un)fortunate to live near an area that still has wildlife, I say you have options: 1. Move to a city with tons of concrete...not much wildlife there...seriously. Before you know it, zoos will be oh so excited over a baby deer born in captivity and have dozens of vets running around with itÂ. 2. Put a big sign for deer to read: "Zis* is human land. Deer watch out or else" - I bet the hungry deer will understand, stop targeting your juicy plants, and go back to whatever leftover forest it has, to look for food. Worth the try.... As for the global warming...Well, issue too personal to even start on here...On Florida Gardening, there was an interesting thread on it: GW Balance and the people helping out...I do not know if I will agree with it. We destroy the balance by destroying habitats, driving away natural predators, and then get into this rage over too many squirrels and rats. Too many of them - sure....Too many people and not enough forest? I will let you decide. Touchy topics, and no way you can have a peaceful thread discussing these "non-orchid" items. How are we expected to find middle ground if, for example, I do not agree with approximately 62 million people on major issues such as gay rights and global warming...And you think we can talk it out about squirrels...Ich dont sink so* Having said all of that, please understand that some of you find things funny that might actually be offensive to others...There is funny, and then there is funny Ahh, hell with it...I am off to watering orchids. Now that is fun. Olya * - misspelled intentionally...See MoreTree suckers - what are they & how do we kill them?
Comments (5)Could be polygonum, not a tree or even shrub really. More of an herbaceous plant, but having, as you mention, quite fibrous stems. It is very agressive, spreading by rhizomes-underground horizontal stems. Roundup will kill it, but it will take several applications, as new stems will continue to appear in new places for a while even after spraying. It sounds like you have little if any desireable vegetation in the way, which will make spraying it easier. There probably is another herbicide that will work faster, but Roundup will get it eventually, and is of very low hazard to the applicator and others who will use the area. +oM...See MoreDie squirrels die!!! Comments (94)Saw on the news that a baby squirrel was rescued from the Houston flood waters. I think the plan was to relocate it to the sanctuary city of Austin where they are protected? Hopefuly I heard them wrong. Also saw where the fire ants make a raft to float in the water taking the queen and eggs with them. When they find a dry spot they have a ready made colony. This is the time to exterminate the colony while they are all together and helpless. EDIT: This is an interesting link and worth the read https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/30/the-terrifying-science-behind-floating-fire-ant-colonies-and-how-to-destroy-them/ They suggest using soap to kill the fire ants but the soap will also kill beneficial insects too. I would give a propane or welding torch a try, the problem is you have to get close with either method....See MoreRed Squirrel killing trees, how to get them to leave?
