Red Squirrel killing trees, how to get them to leave?

We live near Bragg Creek, SW Alberta, in Spruce dominated forest (Redwood Meadows). Many red squirrels live in the area. Lately they've been burrowing into the ground at base of the trees, and their burrows are getting so numerous the trees' health is declining.

There's many middens, and 15-20 borough holes in a 10 sq ft area. I tried fillign them with water but there is such rapid drainage that the holes never fill up (we're in a river flood plain, so mainly sand/gravel/cobbles for soil). Tried filling the holes in with sand, but they dug that up easily. The sand did reveal that almost all the holes are active, as within 1-2 days they were all open again.

I've trapped 3 and moved them 15 km away, but there's a never ending supply of squirrels so trapping seems futile. I hate to kill them, but if I have to choose between them killing my trees, they have to go.....

Any suggestions on how to get the squirrel(s) to vacate?
