White cabinets - shaker or raised panel
Comments (6)Both will be dated at some point, so it's really almost become something nonsensical to worry about. People have asked the same about Shaker cabinets, but in the, what? 100 years since they were originally introduced by their creators? Have they disappeared? People who enjoy a more formal kitchen will continue to choose raised cabinets doors. They're shadow effects are beautiful and will continue to be lovely. IMHO, it's the white that carries this in some way. Not that wood cabinets aren't gorgeous, but the white keeps things fresh for me. just a thought....See MoreRaised panel kitchen cabinets.....
Comments (12)Oh my gosh people, you're killing me with these wonderful kitchens. Can not wait to start on this but realize now it's going to be a big project. After seeing how everyone's kitchens turned out it is obvious that it will be worth it. I'm sure I'll be asking for more help as I go along. Thanks so much for the postings so far! You people are the best. These pictures will show you some of what is ahead for me. The backsplash behind the stove makes me feel as though I am in the bathroom. White cabinets, new appliances, backsplash AND a new light fixture will make such a difference. Speaking of light fixture....anyone have any thoughts on it? It needs to come down because the heat/air vent is right behind it blocking it. Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen link...See MoreRaised Panel Cherry Cabinets- HELP!
Comments (21)Thank you all for your input!! It's helpful to hear different ideas. I do agree the floors are the worst! Those are going for sure, and I think the layout will stay the same (I actually like it) so even if I did a different island (I would probably center the stove then), the floors would probably only need slight patching. Anglophilia, i am leaning towards your advice and not doing anything else until I can really get it done the way I want, just not sure how long I can live in it ;). vpierce, so good to know! I will have to take a look on the inside, that would be an incredible money saver if we can make it look right!! Thank you for the tip!...See MoreRaised panel cabinets? anyone ?cream ?lately?
Comments (9)I do think it is cyclical but I dislike them as they always have a "molded" look to them - like plastic was poured into a mold and out came a cabinet door! As for wood, well I've never been a fan of wood cabinets in a kitchen. I'm sure this is due to the fact that all the wood furniture in my house is antique wood and to me, wood kitchen cabinets look like cheap reproduction furniture. I've always preferred painted cabinets in my kitchen. By "always", let me add that I'm 75 so for me, "always" is a LONG time! I love a white kitchen but whether it is stark depends a lot on the natural light in the room. One of my all-time favorites is this San Francisco kitchen <https://www.houzz.com/photos/kitchen-traditional-kitchen-san-francisco-phvw-vp~45913 But the natural light in San Francisco is VERY different from the light in my full-west facing kitchen in KY. My light is very intense, and in the late winter/early spring, with no leaves on the trees to cut the light, it is downright glaring. A white kitchen with this kind of light would have meant wearing my Maui Jim's in that kitchen in the afternoon! So I choose a light gray - still neutral and light, but not glaring. Look at the light in your kitchen. Ice cream glazed? Not sure exactly what that is, but I detest glazing on painted cabinets. It makes them look dirty in all those cracks and crevices. Yuck! I "warmed" up my light gray kitchen with my mid-tone wood floors, an island cart with a butcher block top, polished brass pulls, and lots of polished copper - some on hanging pot rack, some on custom cabinet where it is displayed above. My kitchen may be neutral, but it is not drab and cold!...See Morecrcollins1_gw
