What are your favorite gardening books?
Comments (11)Jennifer Bartley's "Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook" is a wonderful book, especially if you're interested in the history and layout of potagers. Sally Jean Cunningham's "Great Garden Companions" is my go to book, when it comes to companion planting and beneficial insects. Ann Reilly's "Gardening Naturally: Getting the Most From Your Organic Garden" is another favorite. I check this out from the library all the time, but should try to find my own copy :) Jennifer Bartley is supposed to have a new book coming out, so I'll be going to the bookstore soon!...See MoreWhat's your favorite garden/plant book??
Comments (5)Graham Stuart Thomas is a well-known English author who wrote an excellent two volume reference, buttressed by additional books on roses, groundcovers, etc. Not a first pick, because of the English author and the lack of illustrations, but the two-volume set is fairly all-inclusive, so that when you finally have something you can look it up and know what you have. If you see them on sale anywhere they are worth picking up. For shrubs, I agree that Dirr is the man. Ignore him at your peril, but if you have his book, at least you will have been warned. I took him with a grain of salt regarding the eventual height of Allegheny viburnums, but he was absolutely right. He was right about pruning, too. I have an older set of two reference books on flowers that I especially love because it gives an excellent hand-drawn illustration of each, a good description of habitat, and a history of where each plant was first discovered, but it is temporarily packed away and I can't remember the name...maybe someone else will know. It may be out of print, but it should not be if it is....See MoreI don't want to be a designer, but ...
Comments (130)I'm pretty good at doing my own decorating, but used a designer to help me when I was new to this area and didn't know where to shop. She is a decent designer, but her business skills were terrible. I was her cash cow for months, getting invoices monthly for $1,500 to $2000 for hourly fees that she refused to itemize. Lots of smoke and mirrors in her billing. In my area consumers can window shop in one of the major to-the-trade design centers. I became friends with the manager at one of the showrooms and found out that my designer did not pass on the discounts that her contract spelled out. She was billing hours and then markup on retail. Her response to this was to change her contract to make it even more vague (in her favor) and try to have me sign it! We parted ways, but live in the same area, so I have made it a point, when appropriate, to mention her name as the designer to avoid. I have emails and statements to back up all my complaints. I did find another designer to consult on my projects. She is great at design and the complete opposite of the first one when it comes to business/billing ethics!...See MoreWhat are your favorite gardening books?
Comments (6)I have several bonsai books and a few others but general gardening books. I will try make a list tonight or tomorrow if you wish. I have the two books you mentioned on my wishlist but the price of the book by Whitcomb is also holding me back. May be in winter I will buy when I will have more time to read. Otherwise, interested what others have to say....See MoreUser
