What's the worst gift you've ever gotten?
Comments (19)I had a miscarriage back in early December and when Christmas rolled around, my husband just gave me a shirt from a sporting goods store to keep the mosquitoes off me while I garden. That wasn't so bad, I suppose, but when my birthday rolled around in January, he didn't give me anything at all. I was annoyed and hurt and told him that even though he thinks that birthdays and holidays are only for little children, they still mean something to me. Then my iguana died two days later. Then for Valentine's Day he gave me some dark chocolates and a silver bracelet with a sea turtle on it. I can't stand dark chocolate... it's HIS favorite, not mine. And as for the bracelet, we have three aquatic turtles, but his sister has several aquatic turtles and a tortoise. So when anyone mentions turtles, they only think of his sister. His sister was pregnant at the time and all I could think of when I saw the bracelet was how she was pregnant and I had miscarried. My husband said he didn't think about that when he gave the bracelet to me. Makes me wonder what he'll give me for our 10 year anniversary this year....See MoreWhat plant have you suddenly gotten tired of?
Comments (51)I love this thread. :) Well, it's August, so right now I pretty much hate everything in the garden. It all looks ratty this time of year. One exception: the "fall garden" is in full glory right now! If you don't have a dedicated fall garden, it is something I highly recommend! When everything else is spent and starting to get crispy, fall bloomers are just getting started. Mine has Early Amethyst Beautyberry, Limelight Hydrangea, a few tall purple Zinnias, Mexican Bush Sage, Autumn Joy and Matrona Sedum, Homestead Purple Verbena, Karley Rose Pennisetum, Fothergilla Major Mt. Airy...and this year I tried some Blackie Sweet Potato vine around the edges. It is SO NICE to have something to look at right now that doesn't look like death eating a cracker! Anyway, to the original question: I have decided I have way too many daylilies (only 25 or so, but still too many for me). I am so sick of pulling out dead foilage, and it started this year before they had even bloomed. I'm going to reduce them by about half in the fall, keeping only my very favorites. I've also discovered they are a bad thing to have at the front of a border for the dead foilage reason, so several will have to be moved....See MoreHow cold has it gotten where you are? (PART 2)
Comments (70)Those temp predictions seem to be all over the place (depending on model, forecaster, specific local location, etc.). They seemed to have modified those arctic temps for late week some. Still cold, but so far, minimums bumped up to mid teens. Meantime, tonight may be my coldest locally (12.0 F.)--nice now though, very sunny and mid 30's with some melting (one of the advantages of having an unobstructed southern exposure at this time of the year.)--Trachys look fine but my smaller Needle palm looks like toast....See MoreHELP!!! Comments (25)Do not think I am making recommendations here, I'm absolutely not. I have a story about my family's adventures in paint stripping to share that might just make some of you feel better about the wood stripping work you are facing. From 1954-65 we lived in a 1911 house. The stairway and all the oak woodwork were painted. Eventually we would count 9 coats of paint. There wasn't a lot of fine woodwork, no built-ins or anything like that, just the stairway with rail and balusters 3 doorways and 6 windows including one picture plus and additional 3 piano windows. We had more kids than money so mom got us all involved in stripping all that paint. I couldn't have been more than 12, probably a lot younger and the rest of the kids were 3-8 years younger than I. We got it done! Counting 9 coats on that stairway! Pretty sure we used Strip-eze. DO NOT remember gloves. That house just flipped for $197k and I'm still shocked. Unfortunately, the pictures that were on the real estate site went away as soon as the house sold. I don't think I have any of my own. In 1965 we moved to a bigger, again 1911, Craftsman bungalow with a built in buffet and entry wall of bookcases, a sunroom with 12-16 windows, colonnades, an 8' buffet and more windows and doors. This wasn't just painted, every inch of it was BLONDED in the style of the 1930's - I think that means both paint (or a paint-like substance) and grain filler. Apparently this was a much more serious job because mom tackled it with LYE and a wire brush. I don't even know exactly how she used the lye, I remember liquid and a lot of brushing, all in situ. By now I was in high school and not about to get involved. (She's 90 and too sick to ask even if she would remember.) She ended up doing that house in two segments, she left the bookcase wall for several years after the first effort. I guess what I'm trying to say, is: it could be harder? (I never liked the way my parents finished their woodwork - with just stain, fairly dark - like a dark walnut, I think, and no finish after that.)...See Morehooked123
