I'm another person using a cool color in a lower level (a half-basement, 3.5 feet below grade). Still, although windows are normal style and size, there aren't enough of 'em. So our family room is a low natural light area. I've done a ton of research on blue here, paying attention to blues that worked well for someone else in a low light setting. You'd still have to try these in the specific setting. For whatever reason, more Benjamin Moore colors are mentioned. Those could be matched by SW or just look for something similar. Here's a few to start with: BM Woodlawn Blue or BM Wedgewood Grey (same strip) BM Mount Saint Anne or Beach glass (same strip) BM Palladian Blue (very popular) A couple of SW colors mentioned: SW Sea Salt SW Hinting Blue SW Rainwashed One that sounds interesting to me, again not SW, but "works" in someone else's low-light situation is: Faro and Ball Borrowed Light Found it interesting that a comment on a thread here claims that Faro And Ball has the "best blues". SW Whole Wheat may indeed have green undertones -- in some other house somewhere but who's to say it will in yours. There are two kinds of undertones. Inherent and in situ. Some colors have no characteristic of undertone at all, just masstone. Inherent undertones may remain true in context or might not. Sometimes when the color is viewed in context of the room and its contents, the inherent undertone shifts as it is affected by the surroundings and quality of light. So, an inherent green undertone detected in a Whole Wheat color chip could completely shift and disappear when the color is sampled in the room. Likewise, just because Whole Wheat shows with a green undertone in one room doesn't mean it will in all rooms. If you're thinking Whole Wheat, test it. The other issue is while color forumlas and mixing is relatively accurate and consistent, there's no guarantee that all quarts and gallons and sample pots are mixed the same. With Blonde specifically, I've seen two gallons of the color from the same store with the presumably same formula paint out and show as two markedly different colors. That's why some people box paint. And also why it's a good rule to start and stop batch to batch in corners.

Duron used to have a different palette (the Milleneum collection, which is the same one used by Graham and California Paints). They were bought by SW a few years ago and dropped their old palette for SW colors, so yes, they are the same color. And if you go to Duron and ask for one of their old colors (like the ever-popular Tobacco Road) you must specify that you want the old formula - otherwise, they substitute the SW color that is closest (found that out the hard way!) I personally like Duron paints better than SW. They have a scrubbable flat paint called "Velvet Flat" that is one of the best paints I have ever used (and I've tried a LOT of different paints!).

My husband and I painted our whole house with Home Depot Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Stain Blocking paint and primer; flat for walls and ceilings, and satin for doors and moldings. We used fine quality paint brushes and rollers. The paint handled beautifully and is quite durable and looks great. We took our time, lightly sanded all doors and moldings first, washed and rinsed all walls and ceilings prior to painting. We did all the correct prep work. I even got a 10% military discount ( I am a retired Air Force Captain). Our house looks great! I have used BM and SW in past homes I lived in. BEHR is just as good. I painted my front door about 10 years ago, also with BEHR and it looks as good as the day I painted it. We since replaced our front door with a high end fiberglass door, and plan to paint it with BEHR when the pollen dies down in the air. I can also assure you that there is no professional painter that would have ever taken the time to do all the prep work my husband and I did prior to painting. We are semi retired and have the luxury to take the time to do a great paint job! I have read countless Houzz threads on botched professional paint jobs in expensive homes. As my Dad always says: if you want the job done right, do it yourself.
