Need sofa buying advice. Leather vs microfiber for kids?
Comments (19)"Only thick, dyed-through leather hides will stand up to the test of time." So true. Many places have leather which is actually very thin since they shave it off in layers. That's why so many couches look stretched out. We purchased our leather one from JC Penneys. On sale. It a cordovan (brownish burgandy) color. At the same time, we got Flexsteel and Broyhill couches which were not cheap. The Flexsteel frame got wobbly and the fabric shredded. The Broyhill is looking worse for wear and has a slipcover. The leather is holding up great with only occasional wiping. We have 4 normal kids and 2 messy adults. The shape of the cushions is still looking good. I will never buy anything else again. The better the quality the leather the better it will hold up. Don't fall for a salesman's speech. Read up and decide what will work for you. I have a friend with microfiber and she's "OK" with it. Not overly impressed. Gloria...See MoreSlip covered vs. upholstered sofa?
Comments (5)I have been looking at the Lee sofas. Everyone on this forum seem very happy with them. They seem very comfortable and the slip covers fit very well. I called Lee and the fabrics that I have chosen were laundered before being made into the slipcovers and are machine washable, but not all fabrics that they have are. I think durability varies with how often they are laundered and if they are washed properly. Lighter colors would be more suseptible to stains, especially if cotton. Any slipcovers bought from a source other than the manufacturer are not going to fit as well. Crate and Barrel carries the lower end of Lee sofas the springs are not the 8 way hand tied but a wire type support. They have lots of the fabrics if you have trouble finding a Lee dealer. I am ordering two different slipcovers. Lee sofas are archived so that you can order another slipcover later if necessary. The slipcover does have a more slouchy look but that is part of its look. I am probably going to buy on line as the pricing is so much better than what I can do locally. I would rather buy locally but cannot leave that much money on the table. I wonder who makes the sofas for World Market. They have a 40% coupon in the store now not sure if it is good on the sofa. I had three little boys, twins and another one 18 months older, now grown, and they are alot of fun. I never had slip covers when they were little, but had a green machine with upholstery attachment. It is amazing what that could clean up! Now I am looking at the possibility of Grandchildren! You might also be interested in something in Krypton fabric! There was a thread on that earlier I think!...See MoreRevisiting Ektorp slip covers
Comments (8)jsilver, I only had the tygelsjo on for a couple of days before switching to the svanby, and I do like the svanby better. If I was on a tighter budget though, the cheaper one would have been fine (I've spent many a year as the wife of a poor grad student!) I've had the idemo on for about 2 months now, and I haven't washed it yet. I did scotchguard it, and I got some folex carpet cleaner that has worked well to remove occasional spots. I don't remember exactly how the other one looked since it's been awhile, but here are my perceptions on the differences: I think the thickness is similar, but the idemo has more texture, like you can see the grain of the fabric. The tygelsjo is smoother, which is perfectly fine, but I slightly prefer the texture. I haven't yet washed the idemo, but I have read that it can be washed. I know I will be more nervious washing that than the cheaper one. The tygelsjo was a little less wrinkled I think. I didn't iron the idemo, and it's not perfect, but since it's our main sofa and I am not bothered by the minor wrinkles on it. The wrinkles seem much more pronounced in the photos than real life, to my eyes anyway. I do think that while the bright white ones photograph beautifully, they would be much harder to stay looking clean. I think that if your budget is tight for this, the cheaper one would do the job and have a pretty similar look. The enormous ottomans have the svanby covers on them too. My dh really wanted them, and while I like the look of a much smaller coffee table, they make our ektorp almost like a bed when they're pulled up, so it's very comfy to all pile on the couch for movies....See Moreink marks
Comments (2)What type of covering? Fabric, microfiber, leather.....? My go-to product for ball-point pen on fabric is hairspray. Test it in a small area where it won't be seen to see the results before tackling the whole project.
