Florence Bower's Pink Tea
Comments (33)That's good to know, Ingrid; I couldn't find a clear or close enough view of the receptacles on the Cass/SJHRG photos of Souvenir d'un Ami (which Cass mentions was obtained from Ashdown). The "Jack L" of Thousand Oaks photo on HMF of a Souvenir d'un Ami bud (flower of which resembles the Cass/SJHRG versions, too) also shows non-glandular receptacle and sepals. Because degree of glandularity can vary to some extent with climate, season, and growing conditions (and here I'm talking from familiarity with identifying wild-growing plants of other species, not roses, of which I know next to nothing), I'm assuming that's why Billy West is asking if this is a constant trait on FB. I can see why there has been dissatisfaction with reconciling modern versions of Souvenir d'un Ami with the old descriptions. As noted in "Tea Roses, Old Roses for Warm Gardens", the Australian Souvenir d'un Ami, along with only occasionally having glands, also lacks "...the plump bud, elongated receptacle and drooping globular flower shape shown in early illustrations and photographs of 'Souvenir d'un Ami', (Curtis 1850-53; Drennan 1912)...". Florence Bower's may turn out to lack these, too, and/or have other inconsistancies with 'Souvenir d'un Ami' as originally described. Will certainly need to grow FB for more years further than I have now to see what she's really like. Debbie...See MoreFlorence Bower's Pink Tea, bloom progress
Comments (20)Well, it's 9b, but average 14" precip/year (but more like 8" this year), normal summer highs in the 90's and 100's (but this past week was in the 80's -- go figure), and never humid in summer except briefly in the morning if the coastal fog manages to roll in as far as Livermore (from time to time during summer). Winters: temps occasionally go below 30 degrees F in winter, but not too frequently -- mostly it's above freezing....See More"Florence Bowers' Pink Tea" update
Comments (20)Nik, yes, it is a found rose, so no known lineage. Here's a link to a long discussion about it two years ago: "Florence Bowers' Pink Tea", with speculation about it being the "true" 'Souvenir d'un Ami'. I do hope you hear from Mrs. Bowers, Jeri. Garden web member "idixierose" tried two years ago and did not hear back, I believe; she did say Mrs. Bowers was in declining health. humble5, the scent is very strong to me, and like the incomparable fruity scent of Mrs. B.R. Cant. She got healthier in the ground than she was in the pot, but I think the time in the pot was important for building up good roots. She's at the edge of the "civilized" (i.e., irrigated) part of this garden in so-so soil -- all the stuff behind her is my "multicultural chaparral", which gets no irrigation....See More"Florence Bowers Pink Tea"
Comments (18)Yes--same delicious earthy aroma as 'Mrs. B.R. Cant'. My 'Florence Bowers' is straight ahead outside my bedroom window, so is among the first roses I see every morning. It's only a few years old, but has taken hold well, and gives every appearance of having a bright future ahead of it. I'm as yet undecided what it might be. In so many ways, it seems "Tea"; but I've never seen a Tea with such thin, wiry, lithe branches. My current theory is that it's a cross between Tea and . . . something . . ....See More- 7 years ago
