Help me decide my breakfast nook table for 8 ft by 9 ft space
Comments (18)Anita, I think the set you like is beautiful. However, consider this, legs like that table has will not allow for extra chairs. If the same table was a pedestal table you could get 2 chairs down each side. I had a Wicker table with a 48" glass top before this table and I had six chairs. I now have a 46" octagon table with 4 big chairs and two smaller chairs with low backs. Don't let those small chairs deceive you, they are full size chairs the seats are as high as the ladder back chairs, just the back is smaller. I can get chairs 6 around this table and have squeezed 8 around it in a pinch. I think 4 x 3 would work well, but like I suggested watch the table legs, they can hinder the amount of chairs you can use. I also had a bench at one time (inside the bay window) we were a family of 5 when our kids were growing up, so we had 3 chairs and a bench. This nook measures 9 foot 1" wide from the counter (with the bananas on it) to the end of the wall. . .The bay window is 8Ft wide. I took this tonight after I measured... from the center of the bay window to the end of the first glass pane on the french door the measurement is 8 ft. Also notice that the chairs are not huge and they fit under the table well. ( they can go in even further than the photo shows) This allows more walking around room when the table is not in use. I am a very visual person and use a lot of visual aids when doing or building furniture. I suggest you take your current table and add a faux top with wood, or cardboard or anything that would mock up the size table you want in the room, add the chairs and see what it looks like. Also consider a 42" round table (pedestal) with a leaf. It would give you a lot more room for everyday use for 4 people and when the grandparents come put in the leaf. We made this table 48" and when it was all done and we put the chairs around it I saw that if it was a tad smaller the chairs would fit under neath better so we cut it down to 46". Every little bit helps in a small area. Hope this helps. joann...See More9ft or 10ft ceilings
Comments (29)Check with your builder to see what the difference is between 8', 9', and 10'. To stay proportional the windows and doors may need to be custom sized to fit. We had a 9' ceiling for 25 years. We just moved to an 8' ceiling house. I'm 6' and don't have a problem with the difference. With 9 or higher you will need a ladder to reach higher. With 8-ft I use a step stool. Heat does rise. In the winter this means you will want a fan to stir the warm air down with the cooler air. I used a table fan placed on the ground and aimed toward the ceiling. It makes a big difference. In the summer the same thing happens. I run the fan 24/7/365. Smoke rises, too. We had a house fire several years ago in the 9-ft house. It started in the kitchen where there were no smoke detectors. Smoke had to fill the kitchen ceiling down to the door frames before it poured into the dining room. Then it had to fill the dining room down to the door frames. Once it filled the dining room it had to fill the living room down to the door frames. Once it filled the living room it set off the smoke detector in the hallway. The fire burned for at least 30 minutes, and I was awake the entire time in a lower part of the house. So if you are wiring for wired smoke detectors, keep that in mind....See More8ft vs 9ft ceilings
Comments (12)I saw a few flags go up: "in the midst of a major renovation" "trying to keep within budget" "raising the first floor to 9ft ceilings" "a very open floorplan on the first floor" "would it be simpler to reinforce the existing first floor 8ft ceiling" "second floor is going to be built the 9ft ceiling" All of these statements conflict with one another, and together they may say to tear the house down and start from scratch. If you have started renovation the questions you are asking should have been determined a long time ago. Generally raising the ceiling height on an existing home is costly. Large spaces call for more elaborate ceiling/floor structure above. Hire an architect, if you have not already; somebody has to protect you from you....See More3.5" door casing width for 7 ft and 8 ft tall doors
Comments (18)It might help if you post some pics of your exterior and what your vision for the interior is. If you look at Mediterranean styled exteriors, living rooms, etc. on this site, there is a ton of leeway on trimwork. What you've chosen could very well fit your envisioned style or it might not. I would think leaning more transitional than modern would be a better fit, though. For instance, I love this Mediterranean style: https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/il-nostro-sogno-pj-vj~2678422 I think your chosen trim profiles *could* work with something similar ^^^....See Morepoppypreet
