$2.50 for a pint of blueberries at the end of July? (The week before they were $1.)

It's hit and miss around here. I walked into HEB about two weeks ago and they were $.87 per pint. I think I bought 16 pints and froze several.

You may missed it. About 3 weeks ago I bought them for .49 per pint. No I am seeing anywhere from $1 up to the $2.50.

If you are near Niles, Il, check out Jerry's for his sales. Cantaloupes are 3 for $1 this week and they are really good.

kiwinut, They were pruned prior to last summer fruiting, and I had a decent harvest last summer. I didn't do any pruning of the bushes between last summer and now. When I did prune them--the previous winter, I was careful to follow all of the proper pruning rules, I made sure of that before I got started as I didn't want to ruin my bushes. I'm wondering what the productive life is of the blueberry bush. I read it a while back, but I don't remember. One of these bushes has never has great fruit and I keep saying I'm going to get some new ones...but it still hasn't happened.

Blueberries stopped ripening mid season?

Just wanted to post an update for my question earlier. My blueberries did look like they were not ripening but they did continue a healthy growth. It's just that the berries were not turning color, they were just putting on bigger size. This went on for a month or so, and finally now I am seeing lots of blue ripe berries on the plants. So my guess is this: due to iron deficiency my plants pretty much stunted and went into hibernation. When I applied iron, they did begin growth like sleeping beauty awakening from her sleep :-). In all, between the time that symptoms occurred and corrective action taken, there was a a lapse of one month that shifted the whole cycle by a month or so. So this has been an important lesson for me : I've seen this on multiple occasions with even established blueberries: they basically sulk when things go wrong. If no action taken then they begin the slow decline to death. For young plants this is a faster process but even for established plants it is important to keep watch on their progress. Satsumas are from Japan and they were developed to give dependable late blooming to preclude frost damage and loss of a crop. That being said, individual plants may suffer some events which cause them to skip blooming. On young trees the number one thing triggering non-blooming is probably over sized potting and more feeding after they have been neglected and/or being rootbound. Often the result is lots of growth and no fruit for several years. Since the rescue satsuma has not grown yet, it may start soon. Other things that cause trees to skip blooming are poor light and very cold winters. Something which I have often heard causes non blooming in young trees is taking budwood from a low location on the mother tree. I cannot confirm that. But I have one mandarin that was grown by an expert grower and it took five years and many feet of growth to bear. And have seen him graft a tree and have it bloom after five inches of growth!

I buy blueberries here and there because my son likes them, but they're always those big, tasteless ones that I get year-round. Kind of like strawberries and tomatoes. I think I'll have to keep an eye out for "good" blueberries and hope that cooper being past season and alexa being pre-season means that another hour or two north I haven't missed it. Ann, your blueberry pudding/cake looks delicious and like seagrass, I think this "avid non-baker" can handle this recipe!

pkramer -- Thanks for thinking of me. I know Jerry's! My DIL shops there. I'm seldom close enough to make that trip logical.

Gosh...I guess I did miss the season! I might not have questioned had I not seen news about cherry growers dumping their fruit -- price support action.

Yep. Blueberries for 99 cents a pint are up now to 2.99. Cherries are going up in price too. I love them and they were as low as 1.99 but now 4.99 in some places.

Always $5 here for a pint (not organic) but they did have a 2 for 1 sale this week.

I've been paying 3.99 for 18 oz. but I find they're necessary so will usually pay whatever the price. I'm not a big fan of frozen ones in my cereal.

We still have cheaper blueberries too. Not sure of the price. Just got back from traveling through Northern Ontario so we had a few stops to eat some wild blueberries on the roadsides.

Surprise! I got a 32 ounce tub of big, fat Michigan blueberries at Costco today for $5.

Cookie -- Your 'scavenging' reminded me of seeing a Gypsy encampment in a forest preserve with the women picking raspberries beside the road. Took me back to my childhood, when they would travel along the Des Plaines River, going north in the summer and south in the fall. Sometimes they'd run a little carnival.

Blueberries were ripening here in central Indiana the first of June. Amber froze several bags of them from her bushes. I just had the girls plant a few bushes for me this year. Will see how they do. They had a few berries on them but the deer or something ate them and the bushes.

Thanks for the timeline, Marilyn Sue. I'd just thought of end of July as peak for what comes into my Chicagoland area. (I hear you about the deer eating fruit AND bushes. We have a line of arbor vitae along a fence between our yard and a deer path along a creek. They are gorgeous and green on our side; bare on the creek side.
