Ultimate Bermuda Grass Control

This may be a ridiculous idea, and is half in jest, but I'm dealing with a bermuda grass invasion from the neighbors side, and seeing as how it's really hard to get rid of, and has underground runners and all, I thought of a radical idea. This might not even be possible due to the presence of electric/phone/water lines, but what if you buried metal plates vertically like three feet down underground (I've heard the runners can be up to two feet down) all along the property line? You could fight the above ground spread with herbicide and probably get rid of it if you were consistent, and the metal plating would protect from continued underground reinfestation. Crazy?

Nope, it will just climb over,. Constant watchful eye is best defense Along with poison specific for Bermuda. I use over the top.

I have had pretty good success with Turflon and Acclaim in tall fescue, but no personal experience with bermuda in zoysia. However, the research I have seen says that you can control it but it will take at least a couple of years. The idea is to spray the bermuda every four weeks from June through September. You gradually deplete it's carbohydrate reserves and hopefully have some winter kill and then start the whole process again the next year until the bermuda is gone. Your zoysia is going to thin out a little in the process. So after the bermuda is gone you have to grow the zoysia back in. Acclaim and Turflon are also pretty expensive as far as herbicides go. If it were me I would spray Roundup at the high rate, with separate apps. spaced three weeks apart. You will get pretty close to if not a 100% of the bermuda this way. Some of us love it, and some of us hate it! I have been using a product (sold at most stores with a comprehensive lawn and garden inventory) that has been successful in pushing back and keeping my neighbor's Bermuda grass off of my lawn. He is among the group that thinks if it is green it is good. The product does not claim to be able to kill Bermuda grass but it does effectively control it. It does claim to kill crab grass but I do not have a problem with crab grass so I cannot confirm this claim. The product is by Bayer, and comes in a blue hose-end spray bottle. Beween pulling/digging and then using Round-Up, I've managed to keep sprouts of Bermuda out of my gravel -- or at least small enough to be acceptable to me. I had a larger patch of it that a landscaper came and sprayed with some death-kill stuff that took care of it in a week. Bermuda is great when it's where you want it. But everywhere else, it's a major frustration!

Ft bend co tx, planted st Augustine but there's sedge and Bermuda mixed in. In places where SA has not prevailed or in garden beds, That's where I apply poison. Would be cost prohibitive to kill it all.

I'm in northern Virginia, and it's mostly tall fescue (I'm in the process of bringing it back from many years of neglect by former owners).

Re: the climbing over over...there wouldn't really be anything to climb over - the plates would be fully underground. And as I said, the above ground spread could be treated with herbicide, and the plates would be to stop underground spread.

Again, I'm only half serious about this. The stuff is so tough to defeat by normal methods, I was just kinda thinking out loud about what it would take.

It's mainly a matter of how one wants to allocate efforts. For me, inserting barriers world be much harder than going around w/my backpack sprayer and killing Bermuda stolons . Plus I reconfigure beds from time to time and pulling barriers then re-inserting is more work than I want to do. But that's just me.
