Willow Leaf ficus trunk thickening

A friend gifted me with a cutting from her willow leaf fig (it's about 6" tall and has a trunk about 1/2" in diameter). It's got a long way before it's bonsai material, but in a few years I'm hoping that it will get there.

My question is about thickening the trunk. I've read a few places that willow-leaf figs respond well to shallow, wide pots, and others where people have said I should let them grow in larger nursery pots like a houseplant until the trunk thickens.

I have both 5-1-1 and gritty mix on hand. For my weeping figs, I usually keep them in 5-1-1 mix and large unglazed terracotta pots, then repot them and cut them back early summer. But I'm not looking to train those as bonsai, so I'm not sure if I should treat another ficus the same way.

At this point, I'm also worried about over-potting my 6" cutting because I don't know how vigorous the plant will be.
