Black Gum Tree

In the Spring ( MAY ) of 2015, I planted a Black Gum tree and it did not survive and now there is a sprout coming up, this tree was a Wildfire Black Gum, my question is if I would dig this sprout up will I be able to transplant it and will it be the same cultivar as the tree that I planted?
In doing so what and how would I go about transplanting this?
This was the tree that I really wanted and this tree that I planted in the Spring of 2015 was my replacement that I planted in the Fall of 2014 which in the Spring of 2015 came out in buds but never broke buds.
Would it be the same tree ( Wildfire Black Gum ) or would it be something different?
I am from Northwest Ohio in Zone 5A, I have a heavy soil more so clay soil. It has good drainage. The tree would be in the Full sun. The PH is 6.5 to 7 depends on where you plant it.

You probably would be better off leaving it alone, it will grow into the same tree (never seen a grafted blackgum). You will have to keep it watered, I transplanted a redbud then it done this. After a 95 degree day it turned brown and shriveled up. Your tree will probably be fine if left alone with sufficient water.

If your tree was cutting grown, the sprout will be the named clone. If budded or grafted and sprout is below the bud or graft, it will be an unselected seedling. I believe the original named clones were budded, don't know if they are cutting grown now. Except for seed, Nyssa has been very hard to propagate, and transplant. Seems like there's been lots of problems with named material.

I think you will have a hard time reducing the leaf size of a Black gum tree. It might only be suitable for large bonsai. That is if you can get it to look like one. Best of luck, Gardener Guy

Nyssa sylvatica (Black Gum) is a hardwood tree and is best chosen in early fall, when one can choose the best color change potential out of the available Black Gums for purchase. These trees mostly are grown from seed and vary greatly in their fall leaf color change potentials. Also, even if you want a large tree, do not purchase a bare root one. this tree does not tranplant very well if dug out of the ground not too long before it is to be sold and planted. It is best to select your tree from a range of 7 - 15 gallon sized, potted Black Gum trees. Just be certain to check the rootflare to make certain that non of those roots are circling the trunk. Before purchasing, you may need to push some of the potting soil away around the base of the trunk, inorder to see the root flair well enough to determine if the root flair is growing properly and not showing a tendency to circle the rootball or trunk of the tree. Also just prior to planting, make two crossing, through each other, slices at the bottom of the rootball; That is if you see a solid mass of tangled roots there. Then along the sides, if you see roots crowded and entangled along or circling throughout the side portions of the rootball, simply make 4 slices cut from the top to bottom along the sides of the rootball, keeping all 4 cuts evenly spaced around the rootball, but not in line with the bottom of the rootball slices.

I've bought quite a few trees during the early summer to plant in the fall. If you like the tree, I would just buy it, Black Gum's are not common nursery stock. Like mentioned above, keep in a filtered sun, or morning sun/afternoon shade spot until you are ready to plant.

Black gum is a native tree with particular value to pollinators, so it is the more "Earth Friendly" option. Zelkova is probably easier to transplant. Ken *IS* right. By the time a tree has leafed out you've missed the best time to plant or transplant a tree. Particularly with trees that are hard to transplant like Black Gum, you want to do it in the Fall or Spring. Ideally black gum should be planted after the soil thaws and "mud season" is over but before it leafs out and more then 10 weeks before summer droughts and heat waves

A couple of us have gone this route with various Nyssas and there are some good pics of what to expect if u let it grow and how to prune it.

Mine is a Wildfire. If your new growth is red like a Wildfire's then you are getting the cultivar. If it is green then youbare getting the main species tree.

Either are winners IMO.

In my experience if you move it more the same thing will happen next year unless you do something soo significantly better than the first time to the point where an already stressed nyssa won't die back again.
