rats/mice are eating my orchids
Comments (6)Yes rats or mice a nuciance but they are living beings and have a right to live. Instead of poisoning them I feel it is much better to catch them alive in traps and then set them out a few miles away from my home in the woods. If anything will kill them it may be an eagle or some other predators and they are needed in order to survive too. So trap them set them out they may survive or become a meal for another animal. BUT DO NOT KILL THEM BY POISONING THEM. A poisoned rat or mouth could get far enough away to then be eaten by an eagle and then you have poisoned that eagle too. That's not right either. We are loosing to many kinds of animals because of humanity. Lets not mess with the normal way of nature that much....See MoreA rat has discovered our bird feeder!
Comments (31)I took down all my feeders (squirrels, raccoons, and chipmunks mostly) and have been planting natives. I have lots of trees, too, on my little half-acre. Tons of birds this spring and summer, although it seemed we had fewer last year when I first took the feeders down. All I put up now is suet in winter and spring. Have to say, the squirrels get at that as well, so I may stop doing that, too. This morning, I heard Carolina wrens, house wrens, sparrows, cardinals, robins, catbirds, blue jays, and a couple of weeks ago and Eastern towhee. Just plant those natives and they will come. ETA: I tried safflower several years ago. Didn't faze the squirrels who devoured it just like the sunflower seed....See MoreHave you ever heard of rat-tailed radishes?
Comments (6)I've heard of them, and would love to "adopt" some! I fell in love with radish pods... they're lovely pickled or just tossed on salads as kindof a spicy snap pea. Now, you do have to harvest them when they're young and tender... otherwise they're just not very good....See MoreFeeding Dogs and Snakes and Rats, Oh My
Comments (66)There is little progress to report. The painters are finishing their penultimate house now, and mine will be their final house of the season. They have two guys doing preliminary prep here, going up on ladders and scraping and assessing. One guy started scraping the garage Friday. The old lead paint is very hard and it was going slowly. So after the Saturday morning work party at my pistol club (we replaced a bunch of fluorescent lights with LED tubes) I went home and stripped and sanded that wall in the afternoon. Took about eight hours, much faster than normal because I could do it from the ground, it wasn’t hot, and its my last hurrah so I was furiously powering through. I don’t know if the guys resent me doing this (maybe they’ll work fewer hours/make less) or are happy (they’ll do less tedious scraping) but it’ll result in a better paint job, so whatever. But I am definitely DONE now. My hands are tingly and numb (too much power tool time), my shoulders hurt when I lift my arms (shoulders now bigger, but less functional), and I need to step away and do Other Things....See Morearcy_gw
