Comments (15)I don't discriminating how the plants are distributed and sold. What I care for is the state of plants when I buy it, how much I pay it for , and how easy I get it. I love big box stores' citrus trees. They are the reason I grow so many citrus trees. Although, one thing I can blame them for is that they are the reason I run out of room in winter time. But I would happily move into my garage if I have to... There are many facts contributing to unsatisfied customers. Many times, customer itself is to blame. I read in other thread about mislabled plants. Most likely the labels were correct when the nursaries shipped the plants out. I highly suspect it is the customers who misplaced the labels after they took the label off the tree for some information and did not put the label back to the correct tree. I agree with some of your arguments that big box stores do not protect the plants well. Yes. I have seen that... dead or dying plants due to lack of water or care. More often, Citrus trees have root stock growing larger than the scion ( I got a few such trees by end of season for $5 each. Just took home and clipped the root stock shoots off. I am happy to do that for that price). I once bought some friut trees that only can be grow in zone 6 and above... What can you say, everyone, every corp. has their core competency. Big box stores are good at distributing the goods and products but are not good at taking care live plants. They are not perfect. But again, who is perfect? I have a Asian pear tree growing a European pear fruit right now. My tree was shipped directly from nursary... I think big box stores' nursary department staff just needs to be trained well to handle plants. Another welcom trend ( to me), is that I see more and more rare and exotic plants( none traditional plants) show up in big box stores or local hardware stores sales for very reasonable price. You get bigger plant + pot without paying a dime of shipping cost. My local Lowe sales 1.5" pot size Catt. orchids for $5 and a next size for $7. etc....See MoreDwarf Lemon Meyer Rootstock at HomeDepot
Comments (11)And, W&N will prune their Carrizo to "standard" lollipop shapes, which is also part of the "standard" definition. Other growers will market Carrizo as "semi-dwarfing" and not prune. If you read the last page of the "California Citrus Rootstocks" booklet produced by UC Riverside, you will see they categorize both Troyer and Carrizo as inferring a "medium" tree size. Swingle is small, C35 is small, C32 large, Volk as med/large (it can get VERY large here on my property) and Macro as medium (but betting that's not the case for John, who has ideal growing conditions for Macrophylla rootstock - his trees are big and get big, very fast). I don't think I would consider 6.5 acidic, but within the neutral range (6.5 to 7.5). Carrizo and Troyer are essentially indistinguishable, so what I say for Carrizo would apply to Troyer. You'll see most growers are starting to favor C35 now, due to size constraints, more precocious, produce fruit faster, as well as they are more tolerant to phytophthora. C32 is a full sized, standard rootstock. Spent some time talking to the curators of the Riverside Citrus Park, and they shared that most commercial growers are switching over to trees on C35. I agree - Carrizo has not fared as well in my yard as the trees on C35, due to my heavy phytophthora issues. But, if I can keep the tree alive, it will eventually mature enough to overcome any phytophthora issues, which I found rather interesting. Patty S. Comments (11)Either Triclosan or alcohol are used for the antibacterial properties. Alcohol is the better choice because triclosan is being questioned and reviewed again by the FDA for its safety. They even put this in those germ fighting toothpastes that are supposed to last longer. I tried the Meyers products but they are too fragrant for me and other family members. Someone I know loves them and thinks they make her house smell fresh and clean but to me it's a bit overwhelming and honestly smells like one of those cheap perfumes that you want to get away from. I prefer no lingering fragrances and open windows for fresh air. I also think it's a lot healthier. A lot of people have difficulty with fragrances in their environment. The other day I saw someone on a design show promoting a product called Lampe Berger which is supposed to give a fresh scent and actually clean the air. I saw on their website that it says it was invented to purify the air in hospitals. When looking around, there was a notation that it is not available in California. They said its VOCs were too high so it didn't meet California regulations. Some of those products can even kill birds. Plants are supposed to be good for cleaning the air and there's nothing like opening the windows for a while even in Winter. I do enjoy the fleeting scent of natural aromas just not a perfumed environment....See MoreNew Soap.com goodies arrived today :)
Comments (14)Mrs. MeyerâÂÂs Clean Day is owned by the Caldrea Company. ItâÂÂs the companyâÂÂs âÂÂvalue brand" priced to sell at the high end of fine supermarket products. The Caldrea scents are more "elaborate" (it features multiple-note scents). Here is one sample of detergent ingredients for Sandalwood Riceflower: Water (Aqua) (Eau), Alcohol Ethoxylate, Coconut Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Borate, Glycerin, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Gluconate, Fragrance (Parfum), Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedarwood) Bark Oil, Aglaia Odorata Flower (Riceflower) Extract, Protease, Stilbenetriazine derivative, Acrylic Polymer, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolinone Interesting only one enzyme in this vs. Mrs. Meyers. I've used their Lavender Pine but it smells too much like Pine for me. I've also tried the Sweet Pea which is nice. I think I've smelled most of them. They would definitely have more scent for you Larsi. Here is a link that might be useful: Caldrea - fragrances...See Morerococogurl
