Hardy citrus in zone 6?
Comments (117)I live in Utah zone 6b - 7a fluctuations. Last winter I grew a 6 inch tall tiny 'Prague' chimera citrus outdoors in-ground in a micro climate next to the south wall of my house. Temperatures dropped as low as 15 F. This tree was heavily mulched with wood chips and caged in poultry wire with a plastic tarp wrapped around it. From December 20 to Jan 15 I surrounded the cage with old milk jugs that were repeatedly warmed in the micro-wave around midnight any-time temperatures dropped below 20F. Not only did the 'Prague' tree survive the winter without defoliation but the citrus has tripled in size this year of 2022. Additionally I grew a 2 foot tall 'Nippon' orange-quat with the same procedure and the Nippon pushed out beautiful new growth last spring and is fruiting for me this year although it suffered some defoliation and 1/3 of the old leaves look damaged. I was able to harvest some fruit from 'Nippon' last December and successfully germinated a dozen seeds. Additionally both of these trees have survived summer temperatures up to 107F. The Nippon suffered some scorch in the most exposed leaves. I intend to continue growing 'Prague' and 'Nippon' citrus tree in the ground and espalier them against my home each winter as they mature. Due to my recent success I intend to also try a very cold hardy tangerine hybrid the same way. All of these citrus are grafted to Poncirus 'Flying Dragon' root stock. Good Luck Howard! Most of the folks bragging about growing a citrus tree in a cold zone are from zone 8 so I think growing citrus in the ground outdoors in zone 6or 7 takes effort and is something to be proud of. Comments (13)I ordered the Dyna-Gro Neem for my trees and it works great as far as I tell, something I didn't realize when ordering it is that the manufacturers instructions recommend using it with their ProTeKt product or a mild dish soap, because mild dish soap wasn't terrible specific (and I feared my Dawn would mess it up) I ended up ordering the ProTeKt as well but because I made two separate orders I had to wait almost a week to spray. Just something to keep in mind if your placing a Amazon order and you value speed. Good luck with your tree!...See MoreLost everything. Looking for Canadian source for replacement citrus
Comments (86)Hello Mikey. Wow Mikey it's darn cold outside tonight 5F already and it's 46F inside the greenhouse definitely not much of a tropical feel in there this evening. I was in there watering some Geraniums a few minutes ago and I couldn't have exited out of there soon enough . Mikey I love your idea of playing bird calls and songs in your greenhouse that would be soooooo relaxing , my favorite bird call is from the Whip-Poor- Will such a tropical sound . Mikey my tree's seem to be loving the warmth this winter they have all started flushing ton's of blossom's and growth. My Valencia has never produced edible super sweet fruit , this year they ripened up very nicely in the greenhouse they were really good . Mikey i have 2 tree's in the Greenhouse that never flowered they are both Blood oranges well this year blooms on both . The only downside of having a warm greenhouse is the watering it seems that I cannot go 6 days without having to water their just drying out so quickly. Mike I have not lost any leaves because of it being to warm in the GH , I did loose maybe 10% of the leaves first month after bringing them in do to the adjustment from outside to inside some of the tree's never dropped 1 leave my Meyer lost about half of its leaves . Very Jealous of the winter your having here we've had snow on the ground since December 1st and cloudy all the time February looks very sunny. Mikey I have lost tree's in the past very quickly without notice from overcrowding. Those tree's with the tags in the pics are 6yrs old my Meyer Valencia and Page are my oldest the Meyer is about 14 and is grafted on what I don't know, the Valencia even older 17 yrs , Page and Valencia also doesn't mention the rootstock. Sugar loves it in greenhouse for about 20 minutes then he becomes very restless he's not much for sitting and relaxing like his daddy . Mikey how many space heater's are in your GH , I have 3 in mine and all 3 are going tonight $$$$$most of the time 2 are on and when it's sunny laugh laugh 1 heater. I hope all is well with your family . How does Bo like the winter is he an outdoor cat ? Mikey buddy love talking to you your a super good friend . Brian...See MoreCitrus for Canada! Comments (53)Wow interesting! Here is my list with some minor differences with yours: # 1 shiranui # 2 gold nugget: a favorite on this forum! # 3 kishu: Brian, I bought a bag of tiny small mandarins at my asian grocery (the size is about a looney or smaller). It wasn’t label as kishu so I am not sure but they were very, very sweet. They really taste like orange life saver. I read about this description before but never thought much about that until I taste it. The description ws very accurate. # 4 xie shan: winner at the citrus expo held in alabama. Must be really good to win the favor of all those enthusiastic citrus lovers. # 5 page: never taste it but seems a classic to have. Everyone was raving anout this variety in another forum some years. Sugar Belle, Pixie, Daisy and Tango are all great varieties but I never taste them and can’t find lot of information on them....See MoreLaura LaRosa (7b)
