Did you ever ask your Grandma about it? I'm thinking that sometimes youngsters are given the next size up because at certain ages they grow out of clothes so fast.

I've gotten a few things that puzzled me; when I ran across the term "re-gifting", all became clear LOL!

Yes! My husband's aunt would give the oddest gifts. This is a woman that was married to an orthodontist and owned three homes.

For an 80th birthday: a very old wallet. It was still in the old yellowed box.

For a 3 year old: a planter that you make in a ceramic glass. Unfinished!

A teen: a pin from one of her many travels. This would have been okay but the back was rusty.

For a Communion: the tiniest gold cross, more for a baby.

She once gave us a huge, and I mean huge, ceramic pig. Again probably made in a class for her own enjoyment. . We threw it out. She actually looked around for it during her next visit. We told her we brought it to our weekend home.

My sisters gifts....always: Tacky wine glasses & whisky sour glasses (we don't drink. She said she attended a glassware party and had to buy something.)

Dollar store gifts. She said it was FUN for HER to buy crazy things like plastic spiders and gummy worm candy. A tube of Nicole brand hair conditioner. A paper mache doll.

She didn't want to be given such gifts....when she came to visit she'd bring her X-mas or B-day gifts and want to return them.....a year later!

My family buys unusual gifts for fun or gag gifts. I got a squatty potty for Christmas. We have a large enough family that a mis-sized piece of clothing could be passed on to someone who would wear it.

i sometimes give gifts that I think would be unexpected or just plain fun. My sister is a cat lady so I bought her a Christmas sweater I knew she probably wouldn't buy for herself. I sent it for her birthday so she'd have it for Christmas. Apparently, she had just come home from looking at it, but thought it was too expensive. There it was on her front porch in a box. I bought her a Christmas cat shirt for this year. It's really cute and she'll have something new to wear to the office.

I used to get things from a stepparent that were not my taste at all. As close to strange as it gets for me.

How about a tennis racket in a case that had my name on it? This was from my sil and I've NEVER played tennis in my life and she knows that. I am a fan of tennis and watch, how could she possibly think this is suited to me. She does this over and over. My husband is a slender tall man and he's her brother. She gives his size XL clothing and huge jackets, hats, etc. We've told her he can't wear them and she does it again. I don't get it.

I think giving clothing a few sizes bigger was an old timers practice--a gift that kept giving....But I think it as died b/c it didn't work as intended. The long term gifts were stashed and forgotten, styles were out b4 they fit, etc. In my case, such gifts from granny were never used.

as far a strange gifts, I got a pair of slippers that were too small. Giver shared store and I exchanged for correct size but diff color, red. Giver was not pleased that I hadn't liked the orig winter white. I gave them away, as the "bad vibe" of the experience completely turned me off.

My grandmother had 7 grandchildren and for Christmas she would give us a bottle of Listerine, Pringles, Twinkies for the girls and Ding Dongs for the boys. It was very strange as a teenager to get this.

Dances, what a list! Thanks for sharing it. I had an aunt that sold Avon so all of our gifts from her during our childhood were Avon products and not the cute kid-friendly products either. I assume my mother threw them out.

Some people are so compulsively cheap that it overwhelms any judgement they might have. Others are just clueless. My wife has a "friend" that both descriptions apply to, she spends less time with her as a result, too much headscratching is needed when talking with her.

Step Mother gave DH/step son, USMC officer a hair blow dryer...sent it to him, overseas! (children were under 10). Wish I could post a photo of the "high and tight" USMC heads that a towel dries perfectly.

Many, many years ago, my mother decided that I needed to collect pigs.....pewter pigs, carved pigs, ceramic pigs, pictures of pigs, notecards of a pig with a pearl necklace, cast iron stepping stone pigs, teensy pigs and large.

Anyone who knows me would never mistake me for someone who collects anything like that, but pigs?? Oh my.

That was bad enough, but she convinced other family members that I collected pigs, too! Every once in awhile, someone in the family would ask, "Do you still collect pigs?" I think I received pigs for twenty years....

There's no "re-gifting" of pigs, either, though I did sneak some into different friends' lovely homes....friends who thought it hilarious that I was burdened with this collection. Piggies showed up in their medicine cabinet or garden.

I don't get gifts, but the x large underwear reminded me of something funny, so I hope you don't mind me hijacking this for just a minute. I took care of an old man, who had been my neighbor for many years. The last 8 years of his life, he had no one....at least no one who claimed him....so I took care of him. He had been very intelligent in his day but the older he got, the more obstinate he became. He could be very hard to deal with, but we got along pretty good. He was skinny as a squirrel. He had emphysema and smoked like a chimney. It probably affected his brain. He told me to go buy him some new underwear. I knew he wore about a 30 or 32, at most. He told me to get XXL. I tried and tried to tell him that no way, he wore that size underwear. He got mad at me....insisted he did and told me to go buy them! I said okay. I bought them. The next time I came to his house, he met me at the door wearing a pair of them. His legs looked like pipe cleaners in them. He had them clipped on the side with a clothes pin. :D I never said a word. He never commented on them either.

I have gotten some weird things from time to time, but something that a friend got really tops anything I've ever gotten. Her family gave her a summer sausage for Christmas. She is a vegan and had been for many years prior to getting this big sausage for Christmas. Talk about being clueless...........
