Tell us about your Valentines!

Hi KTers!

On occasion, we've asked for your input on slideshows or content that we are creating. Hard to believe, but Valentine's Day is right around the corner -- I know this because the candy is EVERYWHERE! Ahem. We're putting together some fun Valentine's stuff and would love to get your input. I've included some questions below -- feel free to answer any or all of them. You all have some of the best stories!

Happy Traumatic ValentineÂs Day!

WeÂve all been there -- the card you didn't get, the strange gift you weren't expecting or the disastrous date from hell. Fun to laugh at now...but, maybe not so funny back then. Call it therapy -- get it out and tell us alllll about it.

ItÂs a (Family) Love Affair

What are some of the best Valentines you've received? The macaroni heart from your grandchild or a catnip mouse from Fluffy, the Cat? What about traditions -- what do you do every year that make this special day even better?

You can admit it. You hate ValentineÂs Day. All the hype. All the flowers. All the chocolate. Tell us why youÂd just as soon live without it.

I display my mother's Valentines. She would be 85 years old if she had lived. She passed away in 1952.

I have a glass covered wooden tray that I sometimes display some of them in.

I think I'd like to get a large picture frame to put them in so I could display more at a time.

"Valentine's Day" is just marketing hype to sell stuff; and a reason for restaurants to cram extra tables in so they can serve more people at once and make more money.

My husband treats me as the most special person in the world every day of the year. He's had flowers and fantastic chocolate dipped strawberries delivered to me at work (and has somehow managed to always get them put on my desk when I'm out of my office so I'm totally shocked when I walk back in); I've gotten into bed at night and been surprised with custom-made jewelry hidden under my pillow; he's greeted me at the end of the work day with a single long-stemmed rose; and always tells me he loves me and I'm beautiful, even when I'm sick in bed with the flu and don't even have mascara on.

You shouldn't need a special day for it to tell and show someone that you love them; or to have someone tell and show you that you are loved.

This is a great thread. We all love what we collect and isn't it wonderful that most of us collect something different? I collect blue and white Staffordshire Transferware from England, early to mid 1800's. I have over 100 Cup Plates, a little more or less than 4" diameter. They were used as a coaster with the handless cups with bowl shape saucer of 6" from the 1820-1850 period. Often confused with a child's plate from a toy tea set. I also have many patterns of dinner ware pieces of a specific potter E. & G Phillips, Longport England. American butter stamps, butter churns and English cream pots with dairy names stamped or transfered on the pot and numerous other things too many to list. I am just addicted to antiques and collectibles. I also clean and repair and resale and upgrade my English china. So my life is a constant buy, clean, repair, resale, collect more upgrade..etc. I tell my husband I am recycling and being green! I love,love, love what I do. I cannot imagine not ever being able to buy and also resale to share my knowlegde. I also have an extensive library of reference books and love researching everything.

Hi, Sumac. It's the West Elm Nailhead Trim Daybed. It's in linen, and is a true twin size. Mine is in the "flax" color. It can be assembled to put the "corner" on either side. The bottom is webbed slats similar to what you see on IKEA pieces, but a bit sturdier. The matching linen mattress cover is extra, but I bought it so I'd have a true sofa look. Beware, though, that the mattress cover is gracious in dimensions, and is pretty baggy on the tempur-pedic 'mattress we're using. Having the back and one side makes it a tiny bit more of a hassle to make up, but not much (I remember this discussion from another recent daybed thread). Our foam mattress is very light, so I can just flip it up to put on the fitted sheet, and it's easy to slide it a bit to do the flat sheet. I don't worry about making up with a blanket or quilt -- I just put that at the foot of the bed and let the guest do as they will. I'd never had a daybed before, but knew I wanted one for this little room. I shopped for months before finally landing on this one, and waitied until there was a sale. It's usually $1,099, but I think I paid about $800-$899. The construction seems pretty solid. It feels solid when you sit down on it. It's been used for guests three times, for about a week each time. No one has raved, but no one has complained, either. I figure that's a win. It's excellent for napping!

LOL, oh show us pictures of the covered windows! I'm so sorry that you're both sick. You'd have been looking forward to the day with the sprites so much. At least you can still do your presents with them, as they won't be from Santa. (((((Rhizo and Robert))))

1. A little 1BR brownstone overlooking the Mississippi River in St Paul -- my then-partner and I had to find a place quickly, so we didn't look at a lot of places; I stumbled upon it in a Craigslist ad. I toured the place on an autumn afternoon; it was filled with golden hour light and I instantly fell under its spell. The light was delicious and inviting. West-facing windows, with the river in view. Wood floors, kitchen built-ins. The kitchen sink was quite large but exceptionally splashy, somehow. There was zero counter space, but we opened up our dining room table (which squeezed into the kitchenette extension) and used that for prep. The whole place was maybe 650' square. 700?. The maintenance lady didn't know (she was the face of the landlord, who operates out of NY). The bedroom closet was atrociously small and awkward, but we had a big walk-in hall closet and basement storage. I loved the view and the light. One of the two cats lived almost permanently in a living room window. We had a pull-out couch in the living room for a young family member to visit, and it worked perfectly (though I later had a tough time getting rid of that couch--so heavy! It sadly ended up in a dumpster bc no one wanted to buy it and no places took those couches as donation). We even hosted a Christmas (desserts and apps only) that was amazingly fun (6 adults, 2 cats, and 1 doted-upon little boy)... It's still one of my favorite memories of adult holiday gatherings. Parking was terribly limited in the area. We ended up buying a parking spot on site for $70/month, Total rent... with parking was $925 or $950, i think. A lot for us at the time (just a couple years ago... 2013-ish). We were in our early 30s... two masters students scrounging a living and trying to put our lives together... and lived there about a year and a half. I enjoyed it! I loved that warm ombré rug! It was sold after I left the apartment after this. that radiator in the window had a marble(?) cover over it that created a great kitty window perch. Though the kitchen was tiny, I made some great meals (when there was time). to be continued with the next place...

I don't get Valentines...so probably have nothing to add to this thread, but this:

When we were trying to buy this place, I would come over here fairly often and just walk around. One day, I saw some daylilies and alstromeria coming up near where an old house used to be. I know that people had lived here for at least 100 years, but there were few signs of them left. I sent a little ESP message to whoever (long dead) planted these flowers. (ESP message for want of a better word.) I said, "I love flowers too, and if we get this place, I promise I will take good care of your flowers."

We bought the place, and seems like every time I went for a walk in the woods, or anywhere, I would find a little surpise...an old bottle, or unusual wild flower. Always some little gem.

The first Valentine's day that we had the place, I was looking at an old asparagras bed that had been mowed over many times because now it was sort of in the edge of the pasture. Coming up alongside it was a rose bush. Even tho it had been mowed down many times, antique roses are tough and it had been struggling to come back. So...I got
a beautiful rose bush...red flowers...and I considered that to be my Valentine's gift.

Add my name to the first part of Lindseys reply. I'm in total agreement with that statement. You shouldn't have to set aside one day a year to show your other half how much you love them. It should be done daily.

Many years ago my first husband was being drafted into the military. He had to be to the bus station to go to boot camp early the morning of February 14th. We had neither time nor money to purchase Valentines, so as we walked through the bus terminal, he bought me a package of my favorite gum and told me "Happy Valentine's Day and I love you". I still have the pack of gum!

February 14th was my DH birthday. February 13th is my Mom and Dad's (now gone) anniversary. They would have been married 66 years this year.
