Hi guys

Do hope all of you are well and you are enjoying your time in the Garden

Below I have included a selection of Pictures of my Japanese Seedlings from this year.

This is my 1st go and I was pleasantly Surprised when I seen how many surfaced.

There have been a few losses but around 100+ are still looking reasonably well.(Hopefully you will agree).

I tried to plant a few seedlings into larger pots and they seem to be doing better than the ones in what I would consider the right size pots for the root size of the Seedlings.Is this perhaps because a Larger Volume of Potting Mix takes longer to dry out ??.Just a Theory.

You will see these Larger Pots in the last 4 pictures

The Larger terracotta coloured pot has a 5" rim diameter and the Larger black square pot have a 4" rim diameter.

All the seedlings were together in a cluster.I have now started placing a few in different locations in the Garden,(Still in their Pots).Also being careful not expose them to Hot direct Sun

I am still slightly worried about the all important watering regime.

I have taken on the advise of Gardengal a good number of weeks ago and applied a very mild,diluted solution of Fertilizer to one of the Watering Applications.

I have been watering these by Misting as Mike suggested a while ago

Any additional advice on the Care of these Seedlings would be massively appreciated

Yes, and the roots probably stay cooler as well- those small pots can heat up quickly.

You're in the UK, right? Sorry, I don't know about your weather there.

Will these go into the ground at any point?

I certainly couldn't keep up with that many pots, lol.

Thank you for that informative reply Cearbhaill

A selection of these plants will go in the ground and a good few will go in containers.I will also give a few of these away to friends..

Using some for Rootstock will also be a consideration.

I have found my 1st year in growing from Seed so enjoyable and am already Chomping at the bit ready to have another go come October.

I think I will be far more prepared than in 2015 when the right time is to gather the seeds.

I will post another Mix of Pictures in early September.Hopefully you can Chime in around that time and offer your opinion of their Progress

Seedlings are fine,just water when needed.I just stick them under the patio table for winter,more to keep the long spells of rain we usually get away.No need to move them until the cold weather starts.If you're gonna garage them(though not really nessecary) bring them out when buds swell and shove them under a table or something if you expect a frost. As Mike says,Just leave the seeds out in the open,don't cover with anything and forget about them 'til next year.You can put a mesh or something over them if you like to keep 'thieves' away but nothing waterproof.Again,next spring be prepared to protect them from frost once they've appeared. Pruning's a matter of choice.You could snip off those little branches,the plant wouldn't notice...unless you prefer the direction they're growing,then remove others.

Have never encountered Osmocote in a tablet form - that's a new one on me! Generally it comes in a jar with just the loose granules and I apply a small amount (1-2 Tbsp depending on container size) each spring as new growth begins. It lasts pretty much all season although I do supplement with a liquid (Dyna Gro) from time to time during the summer months as it provides a lot of the trace elements/micronutrients that Osmocote omits. I would think one tablet is sufficient for most containers. And I am not sure I really consider the development of dead wood on JM's as 'die back'. Certainly die back can occur from winter cold damage as well as disease issues but the typical dying off of small twigs and stems is a completely natural phenomenon with JM's and nothing really to be concerned about. For whatever reason, many of these smaller stems or twigs just fail to survive and you seem to see it more with the weeping dissectum types so I am guessing it has much to do with congestion and shading. There are other trees that develop a similar trait - Styrax japonica and various birches comes to mind - so this is not unique to JM's.

Hi Japanese Maple Lovers... Below are 4 Pictures of a Selection of Japanese Maple Seedlings that are coming up quite prolifically. Houzi & Gardengal have already offered some advice earlier. I know these Seedlings are nor quite ready to transplant into individual pots yet. Gardengal mentioned a 5 ~ 1 ~1 Potting mix of BARK FINDINGS ~ PEAT ~ PERLITE I was also advised to wait until the Seedlings have at least 2 sets of Leaves before repotting.. Do I need to protect these Seedlings with Slug Pellets as they do look vulnerable to an attack.They are mostly raised up on Garden benches of say 18"+ High.. The Success ratio of these seeds has been Fantastic..Approximately 80+ have Germinated so far from 250+ Any additional advice/Guidelines to add to the above Information would be appreciated as always. I'm with Mike :-) And I am really inclined NOT to prune young JM's.........they seldom require it except for removal of any deadwood. And that one in particular needs all the canopy/leaf surface it has available to photosynthesize efficiently and produce healthy growth.
