How do I remove old masking tape?

I purchased a ceramic piece from a church rummage sale, but it has some old masking tape on it which is being difficult about coming off. Anyone know of a neat trick to remove it?

I could probably try googling, but lots of you add stories with your answers which are fun reading.

I think that dees is referring to Goo Gone, a product expressly made to remove sticky stuff like stickers, tape, etc.

Goof Off is a heavy duty solvent that might damage the finish of your ceramic piece.

I apologize to dees if I am off base in my interpretation.

Goof off, baby oil. Put a couple drops on it and let it sit. The tape and residue should come of with some gentle scraping.

Of course, only do this if it is glazed ceramic. If it's not, don't try that since the oil will soak in.

bagsprc - I think the HH60 is the engine serial number, not the tiller number. But, no matter. Try this: Lift up the flat-tire side of the tiller and set a concrete block under it, so that the flat tire is held off the ground. Take one of those load-securing straps that has a ratchet mechanism to tighten it down, and place the strap around the tire; tighten the hell out of it, so that the bead of the tire is squished out against the wheel. (If you don't have such a strap, try a rope as farmerboybill suggested - however, it's hard to pull the rope tight enough.) Using a compressor or a portable air tank, put air into the tire; the object here is for air pressure to force the tire beads against the wheel tight enough to seal. Sometimes it helps to remove the core from the valve stem, in which case you have to put a simple nozzle on your air hose - if you do it this way, you'll lose some air while you reinsert the core, but the beads should hold. If you are able to seat the beads and the tire holds air, then you're good to go. If you seat the beads but the tire looses air, then try putting Slime into it, rotate the tire a number of times, and air it up again. HOWEVER, if you can't get the beads to seat, you've got 3 options; turn the tiller over on its side and see if you can insert a tube with the wheel still on the tiller, or remove the wheel and install a tube OR load the tiller up and take it to a tire repair shop. At this point, I personally would head for the tire shop. Good luck removing the wheel - it's probably going to be quite a job. Punch the pin out, and the wheel is ready to slip off the axle - but it won't. It's probably rusted in place. Try P-Blaster, tap on the wheel with a hammer, spray it again, let it soak overnight, tap it some more - work it, work it, work it. If you've got a torch, try heat. Good luck. If you do ever get it off, put anti-seize on the axle before you reinstall it. If you get the wheel off, put a tube in the tire.

I've used the product listed below to remove old silicone caulk from shower doors. It works! If the duct tape adhesive has already reacted with the finish on the floor there may not be any way to prevent damage to the finish. Spray the tape with the cleaner, let it soak overnight and then use a plastic spatula or credit card to gently pry the tape off. You may have to do more than one treatment. Well....sorry to burst your bubble....but it IS the paint AND primer. More specifically: It's ANY paint and primers' issue! * Modern-day Primers and paints "skin over" quickly at the tape edge. This bond is stronger than the primer-to-paint/wall-bond....for many days. * Primers and paints curing TO THE WALL takes a while...meaning daaays. FULL CURE of a paint/primer film can be a month....or more. * For taping use, the paint "forms a tough skin" in minutes...BUT NOT TO THE WALL yet. * This "skin" will EASILY get pulled-into by tape with paint on it, because... >>> The paint and/or primer HASN'T EVEN REMOTELY DRIED/CURED to the wall yet....but it IS dried to itself somewhat. I do what Dees does, but I use vegetable or olive oil and let it set a few hours or overnight. It's how I remove labels from jars.

I use plain old, ordinary ammonia. Not a lot, just enough to get the tape off. I'd probably use a bit on a Q-tip and rub.

Someone who had experienced this problem in his workplace, said to remove tape residue with a piece of the same tape. I don't know if it would work after using other products on it but I watched him use the method successfully with duct tape.

oil, vinegar or rubbing alcohol work well removing glue residue. Not sure about masking tape glue specifically as I never use it anymore because of having had so much difficulty getting it off of surfaces in the past.

Thanks, all! I put some vegetable oil on a paper towel and placed it over the masking tape for a few hours. Came back and could easily wipe the top layer of the tape off. Put the same towel back over for a few more hours, and the final residue wiped right off. No scrubbing, no staining. Thank you!

I had stubborn glue residue the other day. Rubbing alcohol usually wipes it off but it remained sticky and smudged around. Put a little olive oil on a paper towel and it wiped right off immediately! No need to purchase goo gone or other potent removal products.

A lot of times you can just freeze it and adhesives come off. Also soaking it in water and applying dish soap often works well.

Hah, Cynic had the right idea. I always wrap my meats in foil, and a strip of masking tape to write on. The masking tape never sticks when the meat and foil is cold.

The very first thing I had tried was soaking it in water and dish soap. It had no effect. The second thing I tried was asking the KT for suggestions and then using one of them. Success:)

One of my projects now is removing labels. A quick wipe with some oil then clean that off good with rubbing alcohol. Takes no time at all.
