Carrots in a pot? I hope it's a really big pot. You could try to transplant by digging out big chunks of the soil in the pot containing seedlings, and at least some ought to survive. Then thin properly. Next time you get mad, sprinkle seeds outside in a bed!

Are you planning to grow them in this pot until maturity? How deep is this pot? Carrots need at least 1' to grow well and 18" is better.

For now just keep the soil moist but not saturated. In a couple weeks when the seedlings have grown to an inch or so you will want to thin them out to be about 2" apart. Growing in a pot they will probably need a little feeding but very little and very infrequently. Too much nitrogen and all you will get is a lot of leaves and little carrots. A little slow release fertilizer like Osmocote would probably be OK. After that just sun, water, and time is all they really need. In 8a you might want to put them in a spot where they get morning sun and afternoon shade at least until it cools down some. Carrots take quite awhile so it will be late October before they get to decent size.

Carrots are notoriously slow to germinate. I plant them in my garden each year. It can take up to 15 days before they are up and visible. Be patient when growing carrots. I also find they are real slow growing for me once they do germinate for the first 1/2 of the season. I often wonder if they are going to amount to anything, then they always surprise me with how much root and shoot growth I get in August/September when they start sizing up nicely.

Everything I planted in my garden in late may is growing well, big and looking good except my carrots. They just sit there for weeks on end and now are just starting to get some height. I know by Late September they will be good for harvest.

I think eating carrots fresh picked are truly amazing in flavor. While they do store well for me in the refrigerator, nothing beats eating them very shortly after picking. Such a nice intense carrot flavor.

Everyone: it's a very small type of carrot, says roots are about 4". I am thinking of making an in ground bed, at the moment we only have a small flower bed that's overrun by clover and marigold.

Spartan: I've heard that they are slow. That's why I was surprised. Maybe it's the Texas heat, but they germinated in less than a week??? I was confused.

Yes carrots are slow to germinate in the cool spring soil sometimes taking over 3 weeks, but if planted in mid summer they can germinate in about 7 days give or take. I planted mine last Saturday and then covered them with cardboard to maintain the soil moisture and keep the soil cooler in our 90+ heat. I checked last night to see if they had germinated but nothing yet. I will check daily going forward and remove the cardboard as soon as I see the little sprouts.
