Another bird tragedy
Comments (8)Oh, Cheryl, you are not making waves with me. I'm just flabbergasted at the idea, is all. I'm trying to understand it. However, exotic birds moving into areas and disturbing the nesting habitats is very different from birds getting killed because of screeching parrots. Two completely different concepts. Exotic ANYTHING moving into the environment causes terrible problems, that's for sure. Quaker parrots have totally taken over areas in south Florida. The part I'm trying to understand is why your neighbor's birds screeching disturbs other birds. That is not a normal thing, and I have lots of experience of my own, plus bird breeders that says it is an unusual case. The noise alone should not cause any disturbances (except to humans) most of the time, so I'm very curious about why it would do so in your neighborhood. I am not saying it isn't happening there at all. I'm just looking for an answer as to why, because breeding exotic birds who are CAGED (and not loose in the environment) is not the kind of thing that impacts native birds in normal circumstances. Native birds actually get very fat and happy when they can flit in and out of the larger cages, stealing food. I just want to figure out why or how your experience could be happening. Like whether the macaws are doing something different that makes them seem more threatening. It normally doesn't take wild birds long to realize that the CAGED parrots are not a problem, and then they ignore them. So you can see why this is a puzzle to me. Please don't be offended that I'm asking questions. I only want to understand the mechanics of what is going on in your scenario. Marcia...See MoreNashville flooding - a huge tragedy
Comments (16)dlm: the rain stopped late Sunday; today was sunny and the outlook for then next couple days is the same. The problem is that the Cumberland is still rising, and our beautiful downtown area is under water. The football stadium could be used for Olympic swim trials . . . water was up to the wall where the seats begin. We have a spectacular new symphony hall - last I heard the basement was totally flooded and water was up in the main floor. My DD and I went to a concert there a couple weeks ago -- pianist who played on a gorgeous concert grand piano that came up from the basement on a lift to the stage. I assume it's under water now. The river is supposed to crest sometime tonight or tomorrow. Another major problem is that one of the two water pumping stations is - ironically - under water, so two counties have been asked to use only half of the water they'd normally use . . . no showers, no dishwashing, no laundry. Two of the lasting images I'll never forget: A house all by itself, surrounded by water, on fire. I guess those people are some of the lucky ones because they surely had fire insurance and nobody had flood insurance. The other one is a portable classroom that looked to be maybe 60 feet long, floating down the freeway. They said it went more than a quarter mile before breaking up. I think the death toll is officially 13 or 14, but that will go higher because there are people unaccounted for....See MoreVirginia Tech Tragedy
Comments (2)I wish there was something we could do to change people's hearts. There is so much rage, so much hate rampant in the world today. I just don't understand how someone could be so lacking in empathy or compassion for other human beings. I would have torn out my own brain if I knew it would have saved my dear wife. On one side we have people who spend all their energy trying to save lives, and on the other side are people who spend all their energy planning to destroy lives. If it's at all possible that just one such person may be reached and their heart turned, we could prevent another such tragedy from occurring. May the families of the victims find grace during this time. Forgive me, I just don't know what else to say....See MoreSuch a tragedy...
Comments (21)I read that when the slide was built they initially sent boats down with sandbags in them for testing, and had issues with them flying out. Then they set the minimum age to 14 to meet weight goals. 2 years ago they took down those restrictions. They boy net their current rules, but the ride attendants may very well had not loaded it with the correct weight limit. People are now saying they too flew out of their seats but the straps held them in....See More- 10 years agolast modified: 10 years ago
