My Win 10 upgrade experience

One worked fine.

One has proprietary/industry-specific software that does not work on Win 10. The update/install process did not detect the conflict so I didn't know until after-the fact. Should have checked first with the vendor but the software has been updated within the past 6 months so I assumed it'd be OK. Rolled it back to Win 7 (very easy process).

Two (they're not new systems but also not ancient) are incompatible due to no Win 10 drivers for the video chipset. (One of those also runs an industry-specific software package that the vendor says is compatible.)

Two claim there are no hardware or software compatibility issues but I'm not going to do them. Both run Microsoft Money Sunset Edition, which I know has a conflict (fixable by a registry edit). Also would have to update the backup software ($$$). Could be other heretofore unknown issues.

I advise anyone running Win 10 to have a look at the data sharing options at Settings / Updates & Security / Windows Update / Advanced Options / Privacy Settings.

Also at Settings / Updates & Security / Windows Update / Advanced Options / Choose How Windows are Delivered. An option there is enabled by default to use your connection bandwidth to feed downloaded/installed Windows Updates to other PCs.

Yes. Thank you. I was going "in" the wrong door. Going through settings I do see go back to Windows 8.1. I only realized that win 7 was listed because I was in there for another reason and happened to see win 7. I actually do like 10 and so far no problems except one.. and, of course, right now, I can't remember the exact error message, but it is something about a license missing at start up....the license is for something with adk? no, that doesn't look right.... alright, found it through my history AMD Quick Stream error after upgrade to Windows 10- the license information to use this software is not found What does this mean? Honestly It has been so long since I've had any kind of problem that this error message makes me go UGH.... why did i upgrade to 10?? Course, I don't actually know that it is a problem, since i don't even know what it is, what it does, am I missing someting? am I going to have problems because of this message? If not, why the message? Thanks to both of you and I would appreciate any additional help with this if you can

Well, I replaced my pre-November ISOs with the newer ones. . A couple paragraphs from http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-reverses-course-restores-downloads-of-windows-10-november-update/: ---------- "The Windows 10 media creation tool, which allows Windows users to download installation files for clean installations and upgrades, will once again allow anyone to obtain build 10586, a full installation package that incorporates the November Update. The biggest benefit of the new installation files is that it allows Windows 10 to be activated using a product key from Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1." ---------- If I'm reading that right, that would explain why my older ISOs would not accept my Windows 7 key when doing a clean install. Also, again if I'm reading correctly, the newer ISOs should accept any valid 7, 8, 8.1 key. The dark blue/purple image I posted above was obtained through a search. The screens I was getting are the white ones. Why the difference? I don't have a clue. This is a more recent image using the 64 bit ISO I just downloaded: Clicking "I don't have a product key" allows me to continue with the install.

Interesting about one of the User Accounts not coming up. I have 2 users on my laptop, one being biz and other personal. And on the DT, I also have 3 user accounts. Hope this isn't a wide spread issue. So far, my older Brother MFC490 does not have an updated driver for Win10, so that's another black area. Glad to hear QB2010 is working for you, Randy. That's my biggest fear since I need it for the biz. Mikie, yes, I will make a system image just before upgrading if I even decide to upgrade.

Using Norton - +3 points (I started using McAfee on some of my PCs a few months ago because I get it for free from ISP #2, and I'd run out of licenses from ISP #1 when I bought a few new machines. It's not bad, very Norton-like and slightly better performance score from PCMag.) Your good experience with IE and Edge - Just a head scratch, they've sucked for a few years now and IE/Edge users have been switching to other browsers in droves. Especially with the erratic behavior on some websites. That's what triggered the unprecedented move by Microsoft. Just for fun a few minutes ago, on a PC that hasn't upgraded yet, I tried to log on to a financial account I have using the old Edge (updated). After entering my username and password, the log-on was blocked with a message "Your browser isn't supported, use Firefox or Chrome". I did that for a reason, I'd seen the same thing happen 6 months ago when not paying attention to what browser I'd been using and remembered having that experience. Enjoy your new Chrome browser! (left out - Yes, everyone finds approaches and happiness different ways. When n=1, it's an anecdotal experience to be skeptical and careful with, even when it's your own experience)
