I have a dear friend with gout so I have some experience seeing the suffering it causes. Please know that you have my sympathy for the pain you feel with this! It hurts to move, to walk, to sit, to lie down, it just hurts all the time, and I'm very glad to hear that the Prednisone is giving you some relief. Just in case your doctor forgot to tell you, any kind of alcohol will make it immediately worse. Even one beer can set you back a long way. Hope you have it cleared up very soon!

Get checked for Paget's disease - probably a long shot but my dad had it and it was in his ankles where he had the worst pain. Sorry you're dealing with this - whatever it is.

My husband regularly sees a foot doctor for gout. It's under control (he's on meds), but still goes in for routine testing because he wants to keep that awful pain at bay by any means. His first flare-up happened while we were in Cabo, and it made the trip miserable for him. His mother has had it as well, and there can be a genetic component. Avoiding alcohol has been imperative.

The only way my family members brought their gout under control was to give up drinking alcohol entirely, having even a "little bit" on special occasions would cause a flareup. One brother decided to get into "great" shape through serious changes in both diet and exercise (he joined CrossFit) recovered all mobility in his joints and looks great too... Although it took him a year and a half to get up to full speed. The first four months were the worst because, like you, he was coming off a bunch of antibiotics and other drugs and nothing was working very well.

If, after all this testing, your doctor cannot definitively tell you that you have gout, you need to keep testing until you find out what it is.

My DH gets gout in his big toe on one foot! And, always when he has pork butt coupled with beer. He swears its the pork but is what gives it him. But, admits that even one beer makes it so much worse.

I've done some reading on it. I rarely, rarely drink, so it's not the cause. My diet is pretty low in meat protein, but I have had a hard time cutting out carbonated drinks and I read that fructose in sodas can cause a flare up. I mostly drink diet soda, but have an occasional root beer-so that is now going off my list. Dr. thinks it's linked to my other auto-immune diseases (Hashimotos) and my tendency to arthritis. He does not believe I have RA, however. I just learned my blood tests have shown there may also be a blood clot in my leg-I have an ultrasound tomorrow. I'm just so ready to be on relatively good health terms again!

Neetsiepie all of those could be due to the diet soda...can you try giving it up for ....three months and see if you are not markedly better off?

practigal-oddly enough, I have pretty much completely given up the diet pop and the issues are worse than ever. I'm still on the hunt for figuring out why I am having so many issues. Oddly enough, a Workmans Comp agent called me today (I have an open case due to a minor fall in the field) and she noted she may have connected the dots that the further issues I've had (the MRSA, and the blood clot) may be related to the fall-since they occurred right after. So who knows how that will all work out-it is rather curious-but with the lymphedema that I have, all it would do is to take a scratch and infection sets in-and who knows, maybe the fall could have triggered a clot. The gout-if indeed that is what it is, could also have been triggered.

I strongly urge you to research acid- and alkaline- forming foods and design a healthy diet around what you find. My husband controls his serious gout by diet....not only by what he doesn't eat but what he does.

I am sorry you are going through this. A co-worked has gout and he sometimes needs to be home for a few days due to the pain. I don't have gout but I do drink tart cherry juice just because I really like it. You should give it a try; it can't hurt even if you don't have gout.

My DH has been able to avoid gout flareups by drinking lime water. He squeezes a lime or two per day in the water he drinks, and voila, no more gout. He started this routine over a year ago and has not had a flareup since. He drinks and eats meat like there is no tomorrow, so the limes are counteracting a lot. He has always taken vitamin C, so it's not that he was deficient in that to start with, it's the extra, I guess.

How are his teeth? I had heard that lime (lemon too) is really hard on tooth enamel.

I heard that too. I was drinking lemon water each morning for alkalinity then saw pics of the damage it does to enamel. It's recommended that you drink it through a straw or rinse your mouth after with plain water. I just stopped drinking it, I was afraid to take the chance of ruining my teeth.

The news keeps getting better and better-yeah right! My bloodwork showed an elevated blood clotting so I had an ultrasound today-there is a bloodclot in a superficial vein that leads to a deep vein! That could be part of the pain, so my dr has put me on 4-6 weeks of injectable blood thinners. My father suffered from varicose veins and phlebitis and my sister and I have inherited that. My VV are not as prominant as hers because of the lymphedema swelling, but sometimes I can feel them on the surface. And I've had attacks of phlebitis before-NOT fun in the least.

Practigal and gail, thanks for mentioning that about his teeth--I will tell him to check with our dentist. He doesn't have picture perfect teeth to start with and we don't need them getting worse. I told him about the straws and rinsing.

My father had terrible Gout, but in the days before effective drugs. He would be like a caged bear with the pain. My husband also has it, but takes Allopurinol daily and has not had an attack in years. I myself had one attack, and it has never recurred, thankfully.
