Any one have any experience with rats?

I up in Alaska, Because of the ground nesting sea birds Alaska takes Rats very seriously and because of this I have never seen a rat that wasn't a lab animal. Does anyone here have any experience with rats on the farm? I have been mulling over some cellular biology (my educational background) ideas for rat control (which I wont divulge until after I get a patent, and I probably cant explain well without indecipherable jargon anyways.) but want to get a better idea of what rat populations are like out in suburban and rural areas (I've found several resources on urban rats).

Doing wildlife control work and being a farmer I can tell you for every rat you see there are 10 more. Rats have always been with man and can live and thrive wherever people are, and unless there populations get large enough you will probably never know they were there. I cant tell you how many homes Ive been called to over rats and the people are upset because they believe you have to be dirty to have rats, but as folks know in the big city this just isnt so. That is why the rodent control industry is a billion dollar industry. Ive found that a good poison program is realy the most efficient way to deal with these critters, folks around farms, and public places like the Universities are always going to have larger than usal rat populations, the food and cover these areas provide are a welcome mat.
Dont know Ive told you anything you probably didnt already know through your stdies but this is my 2 cents

gb, Are you grafting onto loquat seedlings or quince? Had a chance to sample my first loquats, while visiting my son in Tallahassee, back first of last month. I got the bug. Not winter-hardy here - though my BIL's mother, at Wetumpka AL has one in her yard that bears annually - and she's probably at about the northernmost level where they'll fruit (from what I've been told). But, from reading, it's evidently compatible with quince, which will dwarf it, and supposedly, foster earlier fruiting. I've planted some seeds from the fruits I ate, but certainly considering sticking some quince cuttings and trying my hand at grafting/budding onto them and trying 'em as an indoor plant during the winter.

Well, I went with a solid brick raised terrace rather than piered decking so there wouldn't be a drainage problem against the house foundation. I suppose the latticing you plan can be backed by screening but if they're determined, they'll hang their nests under your deck stairs. Houses have landscaping and lights that attract bugs and spiders which are handy food for wasp larva. The bug bomb under the deck sounds like the easiest solution. On the deck at my other house I had the guys install a collar of two boards wide, parallel to the foundation and attached with easy to remove screws. This way, when it's time for termite treatments it is easy to get that treatment right there at the foundation in an area that seems always moist and shaded..a termite favorite.

Any one used Milgard? What's your experience with their product?

Seeing as the rest of us don't have access to Milgard internal warranty processing...why don't you fill us in...or is your point to just trash the name of Milgard in order to cyber bully them into covering something that they aren't legally required to cover. How long ago was the home built? I see nothing in Milgard's warranty that would prevent them from covering a seal failure. If you are going to come onto a national forum to attempt to malign a brand by posting on every thread with Milgard in the name, perhaps you could do us the favor of giving us the background on what has happened, how old the windows are, what the company response has been, their rational for denying the claim and so forth. Or...I guess you could do like you are doing now and just "sh*tpost" about a brand wherever you can in the internet equivalent of a temper tantrum in an effort to get what you think you deserve. Pretty sure that Milgard would have no legal basis to deny your claim if it was legally covered in the documents. Unless you are just trying to say that they have singled out "Trevor Peterson" to really stick it to. Newsflash...they aren't. Your default to victim-hood status is just another damning example of where we are at. You aren't giving the full story...and probably for a reason.

As a kid growing up on a farm, we learned to live with rats.

All concepts/strategies used for mice (storage containers, dogs, poison, traps), were just doubled or tripled in strength. The cats usually left these things alone. We would nail down the traps (so we didn't have to retrieve them). I'd try to shoot the ones I could see, but they were pretty sneaky. We never got rid of the rats.

I've not seen a rat here but growing up in Maine I did see them in the barn on more than one occasion. They are nasty but I guess they do serve a purpose. As Josh and Bill7 have stated, for every ONE you see there are many more that you don't. For all the precautions you take for mice you do need to triple it for rats as they are actually very smart and find ways to get around traps and the like. They are clever and their size only adds to the problem. My cats bring in adult rabbits but have never hauled in a rat, whether we don't have any or they choose to not mess with them, I don't know. Some of my cats are very mean hunters. We have an old barn filled with debris from previous owners...old straw/hay and tons of other garbage (not literally garbage but boxes of old magazines, car parts, etc.) so I can't imagine that we don't have them, I've just never seen one here.
