Perhaps the supermodel analogy will help? Just like a woman does not need to look like a supermodel to be beautiful, your garden plants do not need to be pristine in order to be good producers. Free your mind from the shackles of advertising! ;) There really are a small number of pests that are common and damaging. And even the ones that are damaging need to show up in large numbers to be worth getting upset about. You will be exhausted in short time if you allow yourself to get upset at every hole you find in a leaf (especially since not all holes are caused by bugs) and every insect you see. Take it more like the justice system- the insects are innocent until proven guilty. Which means catching one in the act before deciding it is a problem. This will also save you a lot of money. I do not view bugs as nasty, dirty little things, but more fondly. They are amazing little things, very much alive and following their own purposes. Some are incredibly beautiful, and all of them are amazing. That last picture you have is a moth coccoon (technically a pupa). You can actually see the transition from caterpillar to winged insect in those, it is very cool. I do get rid of insect pests on my plants, but not from an emotional, angry place. Like with weeds, I do it because it must be done to get the plants to bear food for me. I'm not saying you need to think fondly on insects like me, I'm just putting out my way of thinking because it is different. Cheers!

Those Sow Bugs, Pill Bugs, Roly Polies, Wood Lice are part of Ma Natures recyceling machine and there is no real good reason to feel the need to control them. They will be where ever there is a cool, moist place, such as a well mulched garden, rocks piled up, wooden boards layed on the soil. They may on occassion be found munching on a plant, most often plants that other insects have already done bad things to.

I'm not clear on the type of wetlands the property has. I live w/i 30 minutes of Seattle....a ferry boat ride away. Is there actually standing water or is it just a really wet area on the property where moisture loving plants grow? In my area, I would say that a good portion of the properties have wetlands restrictions. I would be OK w/ the non-standing water type wetlands, but probably wouldn't want a pond since we have young children. As far as mosquitoes....we have a ton on the property we are renting. The house is backed by wetlands and a seasonal stream. The mosquitoes are seasonal and there are times we don't use the deck to avoid them. Dusk is really bad. I suppose you could use repellant. Friends of ours bought several of those mosquito propane things that are supposed to keep the bugs away. I'm not convinced they work. We change into long-sleeved shirts and pants at the first sign of mosquitoes in the day. This seems to work for most of us, though dh is a mosquito magnet. If you plan to be outside around dusk, the best thing you could probably do is add a screened porch. I doubt you'll find any home in the PNW w/o mosquitoes on the property. It's just a part of life in this geographic region. You probably will have more on a property w/ wetlands. Building and planning laws vary by jurisdiction. We can't build close to an area designated wetlands. I doubt you can either, but this is definitely something you would want to ask the county.

They can also get into your house and eat paper, clothes, or anything else they feel like eating. Sometimes they'll chew on something that's wet, just to get moisture. And once they're in your house, they'll wake you up in the middle of the night with their chirping songs. The Chinese consider them good luck when in the house. But they do eat a LOT of things including your food as well as the pet food. A baby one means there are more somewhere. Put out fly paper with cornmeal on it as a trap. They will jump on and you can take them outside. If you leave baseball gloves or other leather items outside the crickets will chew up the leather and ruin it. So it is OK to have them but they are not completely benign. Good Luck !! And I hope your headache is way way better. c
