I've had Yahoo forever. I hope they don't change it. It's the only email I have outside of work and have had outside of work. Maybe it'll go the other way and they'll improve it. I am not happy with the last few changes they've made. So I will hope that it gets better.

Interesting since Att has used yahoo email for their customers. I bet that's why Verizon did it. Might be a good time to be trying out a few new email clients. And have the yahoo forwarded to it so you don't lose what you have. Back up important stuff that is saved /stored on your yahoo email. I am sure it will be a lengthy transition. Might llook at inbox.com and gmx.com I have had accounts at both of them as backup.

I am sure there will be notifications

Oh apparently from what I read they will merge it with AOL which Verizon currently owns. That might really suck because AOL is a dinosaur and not anything I would want to be using. But as I said it won't even be finalized for quite some time. These transitions can take years.

Even as Yahoo has declined, one of its most valuable assets is Yahoo mail because of how many active users it has. As stale and very limited in functionality as the brand is (compared to Gmail), I think it's unlikely Verizon will change it. Combining it with AOL seems unlikely, that brand is so stale as to be dead in the public's eyes. AOL users are like Cadillac owners, time has passed them by. Most are over 60, think they're using everyone's first choice, and don't know what they're missing.

From this user's perspective, Yahoo mail is really poor compared to Gmail (I have accounts with both). The Android app has been buggy since forever and sometimes crashes. Even with browser access on a PC, sometimes emails refuse to open or I can't sign in at all. Having one or more accounts with other sponsors has always been a good idea and remains so now. Not with your ISP (since you lose that if you move or change internet services) but with public sponsors.

It's a sad end. Yahoo can be said to have invented the notion of an internet site with aggregated content as a destination in and of itself (different from the portal of a business or other organization) and then was beaten at its own game by so many "newcomers".

Have to agree with Elmer here. I have a Yahoo account. I use it as a junk account for signing up for things that may/will create spam.

Gmail is excellent. I have other accounts synced to Gmail but because of my low opinion of Yahoo I leave it as a stand alone on my PC.

My first email account was Juno, anyone remember that?!? You could have email without internet service!

It would dial up, download all your emails and send any that you had waiting and then disconnect.

Once we got internet service I got a yahoo account. I still have my original yahoo account, 3 of them actually, but for any real communication, banking services, online orders, etc, I use Gmail.

Yes, it may take some getting used to, it did for me at least, but I really would encourage others to get an account at Gmail or some other email provider and get accustomed to the settings now.

I am laughing. I remember wanting Juno as my friends had it. It sounded SO technical and difficult, I never tried it.

I too am wondering what will happen with this mashup. AT&T uses Yahoo! for its email. Now that Yahoo is in Verizon's play pen, how will AT&T respond? Yahoo was a key element in AT&T's Uverse program. Its a strange world! Its bound to affect me because I have my internet through AT&T. Maybe AT&T could revive the old Netscape. (Netscape yet exists under the cloak of Thunderbird.)

I had Juno too. Then went with MSN dial up and MSN mail. About the same time Hotmail came along and I got it, still my main account. I have one with yahoo but rarely use it. I use my Gmail as my second choice. Others I have used and have for signing up places.

jemdandy, the articles I've read suggest the deal is pocket change for Verizon and they're taking a flyer to see if they can produce more value from what Yahoo does than it was able to do on its own. So, while it's a big deal to Yahoo (being split apart), not so much so for others in the industry and outsiders. Yahoo rendered itself mostly irrelevant some time ago.

I'm sure ATT has a contract for a fixed time period, and perhaps even with extensions, for access to the email capability and that wouldn't necessarily change with the acquisition. If it does, there are lots of alternatives, INCLUDING Gmail.
