landfills and falcons... perfect together!

Went on a field trip a few days ago with group of spec. needs students. Went to a big recycling center. Part of our tour was on the bus... to your right... to your left, etc. Walked thru HUGE greenhouse operation where companies rent space to do hydroponic gardening. One company makes vertical "wall" gardens. Another grows herbs... like the ones you see at supermarket in the plastic sleeves with roots attached. The AROMA of all those huge BASIL plants had me hungry for some sort of pesto the rest of the day.

Last stop, tour guide pointed out building with wire mesh sides. A trainer has about 5-6 falcons living there. He takes one out at a time and lets them fly over the landfill to scre off the SEA GULLS! He gets a place ot train his birds and let them practice and the landfill has less of "rats with wings" problem.

Not sure which one(s) but think NYC area airports use falcons to scare off Canad geese. Not just responsible for bird "strikes" on aircraft. Seems could be an urban legend that they poop a pound a piece every day, but they poop plenty... and Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers!
