Kitchen Remodel: Suggestions Needed On Layout
Comments (5)What else would you like to change in your kitchen? The things in my original post are what really bother me. I really hate the current pantry space and refrigerator placement. I think those bother me the most. What doesn't work for you about the sink/DW, is it that you see it from the living room?Do you like having a breakfast bar in the Living room? Currently the island is two levels. The sink and DW cannot be seen from the living room. I don't know why I dislike their placement so much. They just seem awkward to me when I am working. When I remodel, I may make the island one level. If they are seen from the living room I won't be bothered. I don't mind the breakfast bar where it is. My living room is fairly large and is kind of an L shape. What's that "empty room", can you make it a pantry? Are there kids living here? The "empty room" is an empty room with electrical outlets and a window. I am thinking of making it into a pantry and office combo. One child. I wish I could put the refrigerator where the panty is now. I think it might be odd, because it would be at the at the end of a walkway and near a doorway....See MoreWhat is In and Out in the Kitchen: 10 Trends to Watch
Comments (29)I have seen the "white cabinets are going out" predictions since 2000 when I decided on antiqued cabs for a prior home. White and off white cabinets will go out of style when 2 story farmhouse type homes go out of style, when porches go out of style, and European styled homes go out of style. But people building custom still chose those styles in a home, are they saying inside these homes are contemporary kitchens? Many newly built european stylized homes have marble or stone and white cabs and chandies, and many people are still liking these styles. These older classic styles are always supposed to be going out giving into new contemporary styled homes. The thing is they seem to outnumber the amounts of new contemporary stylized homes. At least from the outside, it would seem if youre style leaned towards contemporary you would build somthing that had a contemporary edge from the exterior looks. Maybe they have numbers to say theres a trend away from whites, but theyre classics nevertheless. Classics dont go out of style. Even the antiqued paint look in cabinet finish is still around, and I consider that a classic. Antiqued painted furniture is still popular. A centuries old tuscan villa in France just wouldnt look the same with contemporary cabs, theres room for all tastes and some homes are better suited to a touch of classic style in the kitchen. I would never let those articles sway me to go with dark cabs if I really wanted off white. Sometimes I think its just a marketing tool to get everyone to rip out their perfectly lovely kitchens to go with something new so the industry keeps business rocking....See MoreOpen Palette : Need suggestions for Kitchen Update/Remodel
Comments (12)You have a large amount of darkish wooden surface -- the individual bits are elegant but the sheer mass of it seems to make the space a bit claustrophobic. To modernize and brighten the kitchen without an enormous investment, I think you are quite right to start by painting your cabinets and the soffits as well. Unless you are really pleased with the window valence, you might also think about removing it for a more modern look. And I believe it is not a big deal to have a few of your upper cabinet doors glazed. Finally, in the realm of cost-efficient changes, you might think about tweaking your lighting scheme. Certainly look at installing undercabinet lighting if you do not already have it. In its kitchen displays, HD now has UCL that is not harsh, does not heat the cabinets too much, and is of all things GE flourescents. It is not dimmable, but the cost is reasonable and the effect is nice. And think about changing the receptacles in your ceiling cans from convex to something with baffles, so that the light is more in pools and less diffuse. If you like having the fan and do not feel the absence of a vent, I would leave the fan, perhaps either lowering it a bit or trying to find a light kit that gives you usable light at the cooktop. I would also leave the floor for now if you can. Cool tile is nice underfoot in a warm climate, and you would only have to worry about making sure that the colors of your cabinets and walls work with what looks to me to be pale gray. I would keep the granite you have now. After the painting and light tweaking is done, you can consider such alterations as having it honed or changing the backsplash if you think something more is needed. When you are ready to go the whole nine yards -- moving walls, changing the shapes of windows, and doing new cabinet layouts so as to create the handsome open spaces that so many people on this forum manage to create, then it will be worthwhile to look at new everything. Cheers and good luck. I'm sure you know that a few of us would give our eye teeth to be starting with your "before."...See MoreDog staying out of the kitchen during remodel
Comments (19)Thanks plllog. We were hoping we'd like the match of the wood to the paint. It looked good to us with our sample, but natural wood can vary so (we weren't sure what flavor of pink the beech our cabinets came from would be exactly, but we love how it turned out -- the warm LED Cree lights reflect the warm tones more and the green contrast also enhances it; this is a night shot with a phone camera so color is not true). Gee, you think we could go for a preppy look with an argyle backsplash? :-o florantha, I wish our dog was as vocal as yours -- we love talkative dogs. Ours only barks at strangers (we use 'that's enough' to tell him to stop). We've been trying to reward his subvocalizations and he now will howl when he sees something he wants really bad and is waiting for the command to get it or greet it. Yes, he's an Akita. Prior dog was Akita as well, but wouldn't match the kitchen. In later years as he went gray, he'd be a closer match to the blue merle kitchen choices! Our late pup: Current pup has an undercoat that won't quit. To cut down on how much dog fur we eat, the stay-out-of-the kitchen rule got started. Without the wall, I think our daily supplement of this will increase. Then again, the remodel involved updating the HVAC system which also filters air better. We also switched to washing at the pet store facility instead of home because of the cleanup. With this pup we also learned about the debunking of the old wolf studies on 'alpha' theory (results repudiated by the researchers that wrote them!) and switched to primarily reward-based training. It worked so well and our dog and we are so much happier for it. We lucked out that he is extremely food motivated, so training is easy with this dog (e.g. sometimes when barking at the door, he'll bark twice then run to me in anticipation of getting told 'that's enough' and getting a treat. Alerting, then running to me without commands gets a jackpot reward sometimes)....See MoreN Su
