The Princess and Brother go to the Fair

Yes, indeed, here it is Fair time. The Princess baked and canned while her brother grew his potatoes and helped me with garlic and took pictures of his dog. Entries were many and varied, LOL.

Bud entered his red, white and blue potatoes, some of the garlic he's helped me grow, a jar of the leeks he helped me dig/wash/dehydrate last fall and a picture he took of his dog, Sadie.

His sister made individual apple pies in small canning jars (yes, I KNOW you aren't supposed to put them in the oven, but we managed without incident), cheese bread, apple fritter bread, caramels, zucchini candy, carrot cupcakes, beer jam, apple cider jelly, pineapple habanero jam, chocolate chip cookies and a picture of a koi fish that she drew.

With Ashley's heart surgery the week before and my nurse-maid duties while she stayed here four days, and Madi and Maci visiting their Mom, I was stretched a little thin. My entries consisted of walking to the pantry and picking out jars, LOL. I managed to find raspberry jam, pickled beets, sweet pickles, tomatillo salsa, strawberry jam and pears. Ah, well, at least I wasn't a total slacker and didn't take anything!

So, was the Grand Champion ribbon that The princess has been chasing hers? Or was she once again ousted by the competition? Drumroll, please......

The Grand Champion ribbon was indeed awarded to our family, but not the Princess.

Yes, her brother stole her thunder, winning the Reserve Grand Champion ribbon for, of all things, the dehydrated leeks. Never try to read the mind of a fair judge. (grin)

He got a third place for his picture of Sadie, a blue ribbon for garlic and a second place red ribbon for his potatoes.

His sister didn't come home empty handed, though.

She got blue ribbons for the apple bread, the cookies, the cupcakes, jelly and zucchini candy. Second place went to the caramels, the cheese bread and the apple pies, and third place was the beer jam and her drawing. She was happy, but even more determined that next year that big purple ribbon will be HERS!

I didn't manage any blue ribbons, but I got 5 second place ribbons and one third place for the pears, so I wasn't entire shut out, at least for someone who had no time to make anything "special".

The Princess is already looking up recipes for next year. (grin)
