My husband wants me to try grafting a cherry tree

My husband is a playful fellow who likes oddities, logical impossibilities, and asking me to do weird stuff. Regarding plants, his motto is "give it a chance!" When I have to remove a plant, he will shake his head sadly and say, "it never stood a chance."

In spring of 2015, we noted that our weeping cherry out front was nearly all dead. I cut it down to the ground, and predictably enough, the Gisele or Mahaleb or mazzard or whatever other rootstock it was grafted onto sent suckers soaring 8 feet into the air. This spring it was scraggly and odd. My husband loves it and I know it would break his heart if I cut it.

Tonight he asked me if it would be possible to graft something else onto the stock so we could give it a chance. The suckers (there are two main ones) are about the width of a quarter. Is this even possible? Where would I even get a weeping cherry slip to stick in there? How hard would it be? Thanks everyone.
