Extremely thorny weed/plant/flower??

Hi,

Could you help me identify this weed, plant or flower? The root system of these things is very deep and looks like a small branch. When they mature, these prickly weeds give a big flower.

I pulling as many as I can from the ground, but I can't always find the roots deep down.

What are these things and what can I do to get rid of them once and for all?

Also, some of these things come from under the fence, where the neighbor is content with just mowing them. He told me I should just a plank under the fence to prevent them from growing on my side. Does that make sense? Wouldn't a piece of hardwood rot? What can I install under the fence?

I live in Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the flower!

Looks like raspberry plant. I've got tonnes of them here and if you don't pull them they are hard to get rid of. They will take over your entire yard and as they age the stems get woody and tougher. Wear leather gloves.

Could also be a nasty weed called cat briar or tramp's troubles. Sparse leave growth. The roots are very wiry and and and have a knobby growth. The roots go on forever. I have dug down 2+ ft and never found the end of a root. You might try Round-Up on it if you paint it on or cut out the bottom of a plastic milk carton and place it over the plant and spray thru the neck portion it would be safer than spraying the plant and overspray getting on nearby valuable plants.

Looks like a type of blackberry vine. Blackberries fruit on second year growth, so if you're cutting them back, that is the reason you're not seeing fruit. They are pretty hard to get rid of, especially if they're originating on your neighbor's property and nothing is being done to contain them. A barrier sunk into the ground may keep it from invading the area where you plant your hydrangea. Constant cutting to the ground or mowing will eventually kill it, or spraying with Round-up in the fall, when it will be best translocated to the roots. That is a rose. Regular mowing should get rid of it. I don't know what herbicides you can use in Ontario, but if you lived in the U.S. Roundup would be your non selective option and any three way broadleaf herbicide for selective control.

Thanks, Joneboy! What is the best way to control the root system of roses? Also, will plentiful and strong grass impede the development of roses? Right now, my lawn is mostly weeds..

This may be of the rose family but it is not the variety that you grow in your rose garden, or the type the was talked about in England's War of the Roses

It could be a prairie rose or bristly rose, but doesn't really look that much like either. The leaves are pinnate, but not serrated. Most rose leaves are serrated.

Still, it doesn't look like it'll respond well to cutting back and mowing, so that should control it regardless of what it is! You can paint any remaining leaves with Round Up to kill the root systems, although those usually die if you keep mowing back the plant mass.

Great info. I will keep cutting these and apply Round Up just to be sure!
