What are some rose varieties I can grow in z3?

7 years agoI live in Calgary, but I grow all but one of my roses in pots and overwinter them in the garage. So I can push the zones and have hybrid tea roses.

At the public display you will see all kinds of roses that people grow here. There will be all sorts of people to talk to about how best to overwinter roses here. For example, bury the rose graft about 6" in the soil. You will learn soooo much there.
If you just want to plant roses that you stick in the ground and they'll come back fine every year, then you should stick with hardy roses. There will be hardy roses at the show too.
Here's my John Davis - fabulous rose that once it's established (3 years) will bloom for a whole month, and then smatterings through the summer. Here's mine. It's a hardy rose.
New Dawn will not survive here unless every year you take it off the trellis and bury the rose canes. Not something I would recommend.
Please come to the show...there may not be many roses there because of the terrible weather we've been having. But you will learn a lot and meet nice people.
Ii can definitely make suggestions as can others here. Do you want to winter protect or just have hardy roses.

what striped roses can I grow?
Comments (35)I bought Scentimental almost 10 years ago and it has survived all the hot summers we have had recently. Oranges and Lemons did not fare so well. I think it (O&L) lasted 1-2 years only. Be advised that if your weather is similar to mine, during July thru part of September, you may notice that the number of blooms will dimish significantly and that the color in the blooms will be almost always "wrong" until the temperatures come down from the 100s. During that stressful time, Scentimental has 1 to 1.5" blooms whose color is either only bright red or a dark shade of pink. I only see one bloom or two tops at a time. Sometimes they have stripes but very few. They may appear to be the wrong rose to people who have not seen this before. If your soil is as bad as you suggest, consider growing them in containers. It may help keep some of those the large shrubs' size in check a little. Take a trip to Antique Rose Emporium (call first to see if they have a good selection of striped roses) if you want to see before buying. I have not tried hybrid perpetuals here but I have seen Reve dâÂÂOr and Souvenir de St. Anne's for sale before in my area and have Souvenir del la Malmaison (shrub) and Zepherine de Drouhin. Those are not striped roses though. Reine des Violettes did not fare well as I did not like the shrub's structure. Comments (6)First year lilies can bloom weird no matter what when fall planted. Some species are very prone to problems with late frost. Italia being one that doesn't always do well even when established. Some of the doubles can have this problem also so it isn't just that they sprouted when you have a poor first year. When lilies show poorly you shoul break off the buds and leave the folliage. The next year you will have very healthy bulbs and flowers except on those that may get damaged from weather conditions. The doubles will do well in colder climates in some years and poorly in others. Fata Morgana is the exception and normally does very well after the first year. Cutting off the tops and leaving the stems would work only if there is time enough for the folliage to die naturally. I still maintain it wasn't just warmth but lilies who probably didn't get planted last summer. Asiatics can be stored up to 28 months and live. Some others died in testing after six months. What kind of lily are you talking about and where did you purchase it? I purchased some lilies that had a lot of week growth on them. Planted them in mid summer and removed the bud area. They bloomed nicely the second year. The principle is the same. I live in an area that has sporadic weather changes and lilies don't come up if we have a week or so of warm and then frost and warm again. They are not that speedy. I think they were ready to grow when the hit the soil. Buy from a grower rather than a distributor and they will replace you bulb if something was wrong with it. Comments (4)Flowers do grow in zone 3. I've had great success, at our cabin which is just into zone three, growing pretty much everything I grow at home here in zone 4. Actually there are zone 5 rated plants growing at my zone 3 cabin. The only thing different is that sometimes they don't mature soon enough to collect seed. However, this year I had plants flowering sooner at the lake than I did here at home, so go figure. Take your seeds with you and try. I'm betting you'll be able to grow a lot of what you currently have. Also, my aunt lives northwest of Bemedji and she has beautiful flower gardens and she's definitely in the heart of zone 3. 7 years agoMy friend (who's also in the Rose Society) had (she moved) a fabulous rose garden filled with peonies and old garden roses (OGRs) from before 1867. She had the most bees I've ever seen in a garden. Amazing!
This will show you the size of the pots I use. I also have a routine for waking them up in the summer and putting them in the garage in the winter. I got my pots from Costco, but they don't sell this type anymore. They're resin pots and very light, but with the soil in (big yellow bag potting soil delivery) they become heavy and my husband uses a dolly to get them to and from the garage.
I usually have around 50 roses in pots.
Yes, John Davis is capable of climbing...but it's canes aren't long and supple, so it was beyond me (maybe not you) to get it to climb. :)

7 years agoYes, isn't John Davis gorgeous? I'm heading to Help Me Find to check John out. Erika, I'm sure Carol will give your the definitive answer about the purple plant, but in the first pic, the blue plant in the corner next to John looks like veronica--at least it looks mine. Don't know if that's the plant you were referring to. Love that second photo of yours, Carol. Hope the rose show was a good one. Oh, one more thing, is Morden Sunrise hardy in zone 3?
