Help identify this weed please?

Could you all help me identify this weed. It's prolific in the wooded areas around my yard and definitely creeping into the yard. So, I'm looking for something that I can spray that's safe for a fescue lawn.

I don't know what it is but in my experience, broadleaf herbicides don't work that great on those. I would suggest something triclopyr based, like Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis

I hit it once with Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis....didn't phase it. To me it looks similar to Virginia Dayflower, but I've never seen a flower on it. Most online sources say to go with several apps of Weed B Gone Southern Lawns for the VA Dayflower, so I'll try it next. It's worth a try........

The leaves and wood of elder have a somewhat unpleasant smell, which is easy to check for. And, as the link info says - the stems are hollow. Fairly easy to remove as it is not deep-rooting, though the roots do spread widely. Better to remove it entirely as it will resprout from the stump. If there are other elders nearby you are guaranteed more because the birds will bring seeds to your garden. Makes an 'interesting' jam from the black berries teamed with apples. Sort of a strong toffee flavour. (I don't think it was my jam-making...;-) )

Pokeweed can be poisonous to both animals and humans, but usually animals will leave it alone unless they have little else to eat. Check with your North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service people on the best ways to control this, since the roots can be very pervasive. kimmq is kimmsr

I do not know the name but I have some of the same weed. I sodded a portion of my front lawn this past spring with St Augustine Palmetto. I have hand removed a dozen or so pieces of this stuff in the new sod. Never saw it before the new sod.

I agree, give it a shot. It's just regular broadleaf herbicide - 2,4D, mecoprop etc.

Japanese stiltgrass, it's a summer annual. The herbicide Acclaim works very well and is safe on tall fescue. Fusilade and Ornamec also work, but I you will probably see a little damage on the fescue this time of year. Roundup also works in bare ground areas. Pulling stiltgrass by hand is also very effective.
