apple tree: tears/fissure in the bark, cause?

Hi there,

(Europe, z7)

I inherited an apple tree, a robust cooking apple cultivar,

half standard, the trunk is about 4 feet high.

It was mature, not in the best shape due to lack of pruning but all in all vigorous.

after a while I noticed only! on the underside of the main or thicker brachnes fissures/ small slits in the bark, running along the branch, and about 1-2 feet long.

So I reckoned that it was not frost (we hardly have frost in the winter anyway),

sorry, the pic is crappy, that`s one of the smaller injuries, two in the middle of the pic.

Now I wonder:

is it some lack of nutrient?

if it was caused by fast grwoth, would it not be more evenly distributed?

or could it be caused by kids climbing in the tree, bending branches too far?

I would be glad for input, not sure whether that needs treatment.

I do have some doubts about its stability so I don`t let my kids climb around in it. (or don`t want the tree to get stressed more),

and as I have big problems with wormy apples I plan to reduce the canopy in fall in order to make spraying it do-able, there is some organic stuff against those moths.

Thanks a lot, bye, Lin
